Tulsa has been stepping on the throats of opponents the past month with a decent Southern Methodist being the latest victim. The Golden Hurricane offense has been clicking and showed no signs of slowing versus the Mustangs while totaling 451 yards despite a pair of giveaways and eight penalties. The running game went for what appears to be a solid 177 yards but on closer examination it wasn’t a real productive effort with 56 carries meaning the run averaged under 3 ½ yards per tote. The passing of GJ Kinne was productive however as their star player completed 24 of 36 passes for 274 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Willie Carter was the receiver of choice with 13 receptions for 173 yards and the 40 yard scoring catch. It wasn’t quite as explosive on the offensive side of the ball as one would expect and didn’t need to be with the defense handing the offense field position the entire game by limiting SMU to 265 yards and recovering one fumble and intercepting four passes.

Struggling Memphis was a welcome sight for a Central Florida club that had entered Saturday’s contest as losers in four of five. The Knights proceeded to pound the Tigers on both sides of the ball in a game that was never contested. UCF did what they wanted, when they wanted on the attack with equal ability to run or throw. Central Florida totaled 505 yards with a healthy 261 yards coming on the ground with over five yards per carry average. The trio of Jeff Godfrey (10-97), Brynn Harvey (17-78) and Ronnie Weaver (10-41) overwhelmed the front seven of Memphis. The passing of Godfrey further dissected a Tigers defense that couldn’t key on any one area. Godfrey was 14 of 17 for 200 yards with one score and no picks.

The bottom line was that anything over a touchdown was overkill with the Knights stifling defensive play that held Memphis to only 134 yards and six first downs in their best performance of the season. This game will be a matchup of two evenly keeled teams trying to make a difference in their college football schedules.
