The Chippewas had been 0-5 on the road previously this year including falling 31-27 at 5-4, 3-2 Ball State a week before beating the Zips. CMU jumped out to a 20-0 lead during the early stages of the third quarter to only see Akron come all the way back on the final play of the game. Instead of opting for overtime the Zips elected to go for two and the win but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful. Having success early for the Chippewas was junior quarterback Ryan Ratcliff finding freshman wide receiver Courtney Williams for a touchdown, sophomore placekicker David Harman sinking two field goals and freshman running back Anthony Garland scampering in from 26 yards out to begin the second half. Ironically it was Akron’s ballsy play call with 4:34 remaining during the third period that may have cost them the win. The Zips chose to go for two despite trailing by 14. It was no good as both teams exchanged FGs to begin the fourth quarter before Akron struck twice in the final three minutes to nearly award them the upset. The Golden Flashes upset 4-5, 2-3 Bowling Green at home last week 27-15. KSU, 119th offensively in the land, turned the ball over twice, but conversely forced four TOs to spell the upset. The last one being a nine-yard fumble return by sophomore defensive lineman Roosevelt Nix with seven seconds to go. The Flashes struck first with junior PK Freddy Cortez’s leg and despite not scoring during the second or third quarter led 10-6 heading to the fourth. Freshman RB Trayion Durham’s five-yard run at the end of the first put Kent State on top 10-3 after one. Junior QB Spencer Keith’s 14-yard pass to senior tight end Justin Thompson 57 seconds into the fourth put the Golden Flashes ahead by 11. After KSU allowed their first TD of the game, the defense denied the Falcons a two-point conversion and dialed up a fake FG which saw PK Cortez run 21 yards down the sideline for a score. The Flashes won despite being outgained 445-319 from the line of scrimmage. This may not be the most popular game of the night in college football, but it deserves a second look as it could be the better game to bet on.
