The Will Muschamp era as Head Coach of the Florida Gators couldn’t have started any better couldn’t have started and better as they won their first four games but since then it’s been all downhill as UF has lost four in a row. John Brantley has returned from his injury he suffered against Alabama but it hasn’t been enough, even with Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey in the backfield. Both Rainey and Demps are threats to go all the way every time they touch the ball but offensively Florida simply hasn’t been able to stretch the field and get the ball to their wide receivers. Deonte Thompson and Frankie Hammond Jr. were as highly touted recruits as there are but on the Gators they simply aren’t used enough and look to be wasted talent and like the Gators recruited them to keep them away from other teams rather than for anything they planned to do with them. Florida’s defense was a big concern coming into the season as they just didn’t have a lot of experience and against the lighter competition in their early schedule it didn’t seem to factor but since they have moved into their SEC portion of their schedule they seem to have little answers as far as opposing offenses. The Vanderbilt Commodores didn’t have big expectations coming into this season but James Franklin’s team has a shot at going to a bowl game but they are going to need to win half of their remaining games for that to happen. Vandy let one get away last week when they led Arkansas most of the way to lose by just three. Jordan Rodgers has taken over at QB and while his numbers are modest, it has been a huge upgrade over senior Larry Smith who was just ineffective. With Warren Norman not playing it’s been Zac Stacy and he has been very effective carrying the ball rushing for 128 against the Hogs with Rodgers also rushing 18 times with two touchdowns. Vandy’s defense has been outstanding and what has kept them in games as they lead the SEC in turnovers but ironically it was a turnover against them that went all the way against Arkansas which was their undoing last week. Casey Hayward is third in the nation with five interceptions while Trey Wilson is second in the country in interception yards with 103. Vandy’s defense will need to keep up with Florida’s speedy backs if they are to key a win here. Vanderbilt will play an entire game and give the Gators a real fight. After the loss against the Bulldogs, the Gators may fall flat in this SEC battle.
