Army took a break from their schedule with a step down in class and the results were reflected on the scoreboard where the Black Knights dominated play on both sides of the ball. The Army ground game rolled up a season high 514 rushing yards on 60 carries for over 8 ½ yards per carry. The Black Knights used 13 ball carriers as they emptied the bench with a 42-0 lead heading in to the locker room. The big guns were Raymond Maples who led the team with 159 yards on ten carries with Larry Dixon next in line with 85yards on another ten totes but 12 of the 13 ball carriers averaged at least four yards per try. With such a dominating performance on the ground there was no need to throw the ball and Army quarterback Max Jenkins threw twice with great results with one completion going foe 30 yards and a touchdown. The Black Knights defense smothered the Rams allowing only 86 yards and forcing a pair of giveaways. Air Force needed a win and faced the perfect opponent to get one in a struggling New Mexico who has problems on both sides of the ball and the Falcons made sure that trend didn’t change with a strong all around performance. The Falcons game plan was simple; keep the ball on the ground, score some points and get out without injuries. All three were successful with AFA running for 335 of their 361 yards with one giveaway but few other mistakes. Eleven different players took their shot at running the ball with three players representing the core of the production. Connor Dietz (6-87) was the most explosive followed by Asher Clark (10-75) and Mike DeWitt (15-64) who found the end zone four times. The passing game only saw three passes with two completions for a total of 26 yards. The Air Force defense held up their end of the bargain by limiting Nee Mexico to 223 yards while taking the ball away three times. Both sides win since they do such an excellent job of playing football and the winner will have the edge for the coveted commanders trophy.
