Washington Redskins vs. Miami Dolphins
Washington Redskins vs. Miami Dolphins

The Washington Redskins started the season off quickly but have slowly started to regress and lose games. Now they face a Miami Dolphins team that has just one win on the season and now they are expected to win again.

Miami's Sun Life Stadium is the scene this Sunday when the Washington Redskins take on the host Dolphins in a scheduled 1:00 PM contest. Going by the early football betting lines, the Dolphins are favored by -2 1/2 points, playing at home.

After an impressive 3-1 start, the Redskins have now lost four straight, the most recent being a 19-11 home loss this past Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers. Washington head coach Mike Shanahan tried an old maneuver, shaking up the starting lineup in an attempt to change the 'Skins fortunes, but the inconsistent offense and porous run defense were bigger factors as the 'Niners (7-1) won their sixth straight game and more remarkably, they are now 4-0 playing in the Eastern Time Zone, nearly unheard of. RB Frank Gore (107 yards on 19 carries) went over 100 yards for the fifth straight game as the 49ers increased their lead atop the NFC West to five games, the biggest margin in the NFL. Gore fell a bit short to McGahee with a monster game for the most rushing yards in the NFL last week, but is extremely solid.

Shanahan started three rookies, OG Maurice Hurt, RB Roy Helu and WR Leonard Hankerson, but they didn't help, as Washington totaled just 303 yards of offense, including an anemic 52 on the ground, led by Helu's 41 on 10 carries. QB John Beck, making his fourth start in place of the benched Rex Grossman, connected on 30 of 47 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown, although the score occurred with just 1:10 remaining. Helu was productive as a receiver, hauling in an NFL-season high 14 passes coming out of the backfield. The only other 'Skins points came on Graham Gano's franchise-record 59-yard field goal as the first-half expired.

Defensively, other than being unable to contain Gore, the Redskins performed decently, surrendering but one breakdown, that a 30-yard TD pass from QB Alex Smith to rookie FB Bruce Miller just before halftime. The remainder of the 'Niners points came from PK David Akers' 4 field goals.

Just when observers and fans had about given up on the Miami Dolphins, Tony Sparano's team went into Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium and thoroughly dominated what had been one of the AFC Conference's hottest teams, the Chiefs, by a resounding 31-3 score. The victory was the first of the season for the now 1-7 Dolphins, and ended KC's 4-game winning streak after starting the season 0-3. Miami's offense, mediocre at best all season, exploded for a season-high 351 yards, led by QB Matt Moore's 244 yards and 3 TDs on 17 for 23 passing. Moore had plenty of help, with RB Reggie Bush gaining 92 yards on 13 carries, including a score, while TE Anthony Fasano caught only 2 passes but both of them went for 1st-half touchdowns. WR Brandon Marshall hauled in 8 balls for 106 yards and another TD as Miami's offense, for the first time in 2011, performed crisply and efficiently, erasing some of the season's first seven weeks of misery.

On the defensive side, Miami wasn't shut-down, but stiffened up when it mattered, e4specially early in the 4th-quarter, when Kansas City, after a long drive, were stuffed by the Dolphins on a 4th-down at the Miami 3-yard line, dashing any hopes of another late-game comeback by the Chiefs, something they've become known for this season. Despite their record, Miami's defense has been solid for most of the season, even with sub-par performances by some of the personnel who were expected to play featured roles.

Perhaps Miami will use this victory as a springboard to a second-half turnaround. The schedule isn't favorable, with only the Washington and Dallas games against teams that aren't at .500 or above, but the team did have a different strut in their collective walk against the Chiefs, and Sparano has managed to keep the team in virtually every game. For the Redskins, it's difficult to imagine a turnaround with so many injuries to key personnel and the defense being overworked due to an ineffective offense.

It is interesting to see that the Miami Dolphins have just one win, but they are favorites in this game and more than a field goal. That line is subject to change as we get closer to the kick off but it just shows how much parody there is in the NFL.
