Baltimore Ravens vs. Seattle Seahawks
Baltimore Ravens vs. Seattle Seahawks

The Baltimore Ravens are one of the best teams in football and they are coming off a last minute win against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers that allowed them to sweep the series. So they may be less than exciting to go to the Seattle Seahawks and play in week ten of the NFL football schedule. The Ravens have dropped plenty of ugly games this week on the road when they were not up for the game andit could happen again this week.

The Baltimore Ravens head out west this Sunday for a scheduled 1:00 PM contest with the Seattle Seahawks at Seattle's Qwest Field. According to the early football betting lines, the Ravens are favored by -7 points.

Coming off their season sweep of their hated rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers this past Sunday night, the Baltimore Ravens are flying high with the AFC Conference's best record (7-2). The last-second 23-20 victory established the team as not just a defensive juggernaut, especially with QB Joe Flacco's late-game heroics, a page stolen from Ben Roethlisberger's playbook. Flacco connected with rookie Torrey Smith on a 26-yard TD with :08 remaining to capture the win. Even sweeter, it happened on Pittsburgh's Heinz Field, where Baltimore's season has ended in two of the past three years, providing some measure of revenge.

Flacco was marvelous, connecting on 28 of 47 passes for an even 300 yards, while avoiding the costly turnovers and mental errors that have regularly plagued him when visiting Heinz Field. His final drive was a thing of beauty, and even though Smith dropped an apparent TD pass just a few plays earlier, Flacco showed confidence in the speedy rookie and was rewarded when Smith cradled the ball in the far right corner of the end zone as the disbelieving Heinz Field crowd groaned in agony. Smith started off the game terribly, drawing a holding penalty on the Ravens' first play from scrimmage, causing a 76-yard scamper by RB Ray Rice to be called back. The ground game on both sides was not easy, with Baltimore gaining just 67 yards, while Pittsburgh could roll up only 70.

As expected, Baltimore's defense came up huge when it was required, led by LBs Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs. Suggs picked off a Roethlisberger pass in the third quarter to stop an apparent go-ahead drive by the Steelers, while Lewis, the heart and soul of the Raven's defense, made big plays all evening, as well as providing inspiration. Along with S Ed Reed, this unit elicits fear in every opponent, and it's guaranteed that facing them will never be a walk in the park.

After hanging tough for the first portion of the game, Seattle was unable to capitalize on a 6-6 halftime deadlock, and couldn't stop either DeMarco Murray or Tony Romo in the second half and fell to the Dallas Cowboys, 23-13, dropping them to 2-6.

QB Tavaris Jackson threw for 221 yards on 17 for 30 passing, but he also was intercepted 3 times, including two on successive plays. The picks led to 10 Cowboys points. RB Marshawn Lynch was about the only other threat the Seahawks had offensively, and he had his best day of the season, gaining 135 yards on 23 carries, his best performance since 2008, when he was a Buffalo Bill.

Seattle's defense couldn't contain Dallas rookie RB DeMarco Murray, being victimized for 139 yards by the Oklahoma product who has hopes for the NFL offensive rookie of the year. They had other issues, including being penalized 10 times for 88 yards. The defense made several key stops in the early going, forcing Dallas to settle for field goals. The defense is capable of shutting down an opponent, but everything has to be clicking, and with so little room for error, any changes or injury could render Carroll's best-laid plans to waste.

The Ravens are looking like the class of the AFC at this point, but as they proved in the Jacksonville game a few weeks back, they can't presume superiority. The Seahawks, under Pete Carroll, have been competitive, but they still have too many question marks to be considered contenders. They remain capable of pulling the random upset, but until they upgrade their skill personnel, and become more comfortable with Carroll's system, middle-of-the-pack is about the best they can expect.

The Ravens have to avoid the same letdown that plagued them against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football or against the Tennessee Titans when they hit the road after a big win. Seattle is a different team at home and they get plenty of fan support that may be the difference in winning against the bad Baltimore Ravens.
