A critical AFC North matchup occurs this Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati when the surprising Bengals play host to the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers. Gametime is slated for 1:00 PM, and the early NFL odds favor the Steelers by -3 1/2 points. Pittsburgh had a chance to secure first place all to themselves on Sunday night, but instead wound up on the short end of a 23-20 loss to Baltimore, the second loss on the season to their arch-rivals. The game appeared to be under control for the Steelers, who'd mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback to take a 20-16 lead on QB Ben Roethlisberger's 25-yard TD pass to Mike Wallace with 4:59 remaining. The Ravens however, behind QB Joe Flacco (38 of 47 for 300 yards), drove down the field and scored the game-winner on a 26-yard TD pass from Flacco to rookie WR Torrey Smith with :08 remaining. Smith, who'd dropped a sure-fire TD pass just a few plays previous, gained a measure of redemption for his holding penalty on the game's first play from scrimmage, which negated a 76-yard scoring run by Ray Rice. Pittsburgh's offense certainly played well enough to win, with Roethlisberger (20 of 37, 330 yards, 1 TD) his usual efficient self, and his receivers, Antonio Brown (5 receptions, 109 yards) and TE Heath Miller (5 catches for 73) routinely finding open spaces in the Ravens defense. The running game, as was expected, had tough sledding on both sides, with the Steelers gaining just 70 yards on 20 carries, led by Rashard Mendenhall's 52 on 13 carries. The Steeler defense received a big boost with the return to action by LB James Harrison, who'd missed 3 games after suffering a fractured orbital bone. Harrison wasted little time in letting it be known he was back, recording 3 sacks of Flacco on the evening. The game lived up to expectations, especially in the first half, which ended with a 9-6 Ravens lead on Billy Cundiff's 51-yard field goal as the clock expired. The Bengals and their surprisingly successful young offense, led by rookies QB Andy Dalton (a contender for NFL offensive rookie of the year)and WR A.J. Green, continued to confound the experts this past Sunday, rallying from a 17-7 halftime deficit on the road to score 17 points of their own after intermission, holding Tennessee scoreless in capturing their fifth straight win, 24-17. The win keeps the Bengals tied with Baltimore atop the AFC North with identical 6-2 marks, a half-game ahead of Pittsburgh (6-3). Dalton continued to display his maturity and confidence by throwing for 3 TDs on the afternoon. Dalton connected on 22 of 39 passes for 217 yards while mixing up his targets. Three different receivers were on the receiving end of Dalton's scoring tosses, Colin Cochart, Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell, while Green, despite being shut out of the end zone, led Cincy's receivers with 7 catches for 83 yards. Cincinnati also received a boost in their ground game from RB Cedric Benson, who rang up 78 yards on 20 carries. Benson's production is a plus for the Bengals, especially since he's missed 3 games in 2011 due to nagging injuries. Cincinnati's defense, giving up an average of just 17.5 points per game, is second in the AFC Conference behind Baltimore and third overall in the NFL. DE Carlos Dunlap sacked Tennessee's Matt Hasselbeck twice on Sunday, while the unit as a whole limited the Titans to just 78 yards rushing for the afternoon. Obviously, this is a critical game for both teams. The Steelers are chomping at the bit to regain their swagger, especially after being swept by the Ravens, while the Bengals, who have the advantage of lower expectations, nonetheless are eager to prove both to the Steelers and the rest of the league that they are indeed, for real and should be respected as such. This Sunday's game will be the biggest in Cincinnati in nearly two decades, and with an expected rabid crowd in attendance, should be one of the season's best. Now it will be up to the Bengals to prove all the experts wrong and play a full game against Pittsburgh and hoping to get a win and rocket to the top of the AFC North.
