New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons
New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons

The New Orleans Saints and their high-flying offense will head to Atlanta to take on the Falcons. This rivalry has started to grow ugly over the last few years as these teams do not like each other and are both competitive. That makes this one of the best games to watch and could make all the difference in the playoff picture in the NFC.

A crucial NFC South matchup is on tap this Sunday afternoon at the Georgia Dome when the New Orleans Saints come calling for a game with the Atlanta Falcons. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM, and the football odds favor the Saints by -1 point.

The two NFC South teams that have won the last two division titles meet for the first time in 2011, and if past history is any barometer, it should be a proverbial barn-burner. The Saints come in with a slim half-game lead in the division after their 27-16 win over another NFC South squad, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past Sunday. New Orleans rediscovered their oft-maligned ground game versus the Bucs, piling up a season-high 195 yards, led by the combined efforts of Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas, who teamed up for 133 yards on 23 carries as the Saints improved to 6-3.

QB Drew Brees didn't have to fill the air with passes for a change, settling instead for a balanced attack, something New Orleans needed. Brees turned in an efficient 27 for 36, 258 yards and 2 TD performance, with TE Jimmy Graham and RB Darren Sproles topping the receiving attack, combining for 11 catches, good for 135 yards and a Sproles TD. The Saints have been competing for the NFL's highest scoring team every week this season.

New Orleans' pass rush got to QB Josh Freeman just once, but as on the offensive side, balance carried the defense through. The Saints are developing a reputation for bending, but then stiffening up when it's needed. LB Jonathan Casillas, filling in for the injured Jonathan Vilma, continues to make a name for himself, leading the defense with 10 tackles. A scary moment occurred on the second play of the game when veteran CB Tracy Porter went down with an apparent neck injury and had to be carted off the field. His status is listed as questionable for the Falcons game.

The Falcons, after an early season marked by inconsistency, appear to be regaining the tremendous balance they were known for last season. They completely steamrolled the 0-9 Indianapolis Colts, 31-7 this past Sunday with a balanced offensive attack along with a total team effort on defense. QB Matt Ryan (14 of 24, 275 yards, 3 TDs) was sharp, and hit on some big plays, something that's been absent from the Falcons attack this season. Roolie WR Julio Jones had his best day as a pro, grabbing only 3 passes, but he made the most of his opportunities, piling up 131 yards and 2 long TDs. Jones also carried the ball twice on reverses and gained 33 more yards for his efforts, he is still making his case for offensive rookie for the year, but has some work to do. Atlanta's ground game was also effective, with RBs Michael Turner and rookie Jaquizz Rodgers combining for 115 yards on 29 carries as the Falcons completely dominated the woeful, Peyton Manning-less Colts in nearly every category.

Defensively, Atlanta never allowed the Colts to gain any traction, led by a pass rush that recorded 2 sacks and 4 QB hits. Also, the Falcons held the Indianapolis ground game to just 83 yards on 21 attempts, and won the time of possession battle overwhelmingly, 37:46 to 22:14. About the only blip on an otherwise splendid performance was a 6-yard interception return for a TD midway through the second quarter by the Colts' Jerraud Powers, the only points in the game for Indy. Remarkably, the Atlanta win was just their second all-time against the Colts. Their overall record versus Indianapolis is now 2-13.

Both teams need a win badly in this matchup, since it appears the same two teams will still be in contention at season's end. With the Saints newly-found ground game complementing the aerial assault of Brees and Co., opposing defenses will have their hands full. For the Falcons, it's hoped that Julio Jones emergence will motivate his fellow WR, Roddy White, who's been in a semi-slump for most of the season. These two teams know each other well, so don't expect many surprises this Sunday, just good hard-hitting football.

Also expect some points as both of these teams have so many weapons it could make the difference in the playoff picture when the season begins to wind down.
