New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers
New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers

What a year for the San Francisco 49ers. They have completely turned around their season and they are on the verge of winning the weak NFC West and they are nearly a lock for the NFL playoffs. This week they will get a true test when they get the New York Giants off a very big win of their own as they just got done beating the New England Patriots.

Two NFC Conference teams with post-season aspirations square off this Sunday at fabled Candlestick Park when the visiting New York Giants take on the surprising San Francisco 49ers. Kickoff is slated for 4:15 PM, and the early NFL odds favor the 49ers by -3 points.

The Giants grabbed a huge victory on Sunday, with QB Eli Manning out-dueling New England's Tom Brady in a dramatic come-from-behind 24-20 victory that was reminiscent of the last time these two teams met, the 2008 Super Bowl. The frequently criticized Manning drove the Giants 80 yards in 8 plays, connecting with little-used second-year TE Jake Ballard on the game-winner with :15 seconds remaining. For the game, Manning went 20 for 39 for 250 yards, and with his Brady-like winning drive, perhaps silenced his many critics. He had plenty of help, from RB Brandon Jacobs' 72 yards on 18 carries, to WR Victor Cruz' 6 catches for 01 yards to an offensive line that allowed no sacks, giving Manning ample time to find his targets. Jacobs, in particular, can be ultra-crucial to the Giants continued success, especially with his running-mate, Ahmad Bradshaw hobbled with a foot injury. When healthy and motivated, Jacobs is one of the NFL's fiercest weapons coming through the line with the ball.

On defense, the Giants were unable to keep Brady from putting up big numbers (28 of 49, 342 yards, 2 TDs), but they also intercepted the three-time NFL MVP twice, one each by Mathias Kiwanuka and Deon Grant. They also forced 2 fumbles as they dropped the Patriots to 5-3 and a first place tie with the New York Jets atop the AFC East.

New York's Sunday opponent, the 7-1 San Francisco 49ers, have been, along with the equally surprising Detroit Lions, the NFC's "breakout" teams for 2011. Winners of six straight, the Niners have the current largest division lead of any team in the NFL, a whopping five-game lead in the otherwise weak NFC West. First-year head coach Jim Harbaugh has been nothing short of a miracle worker in the Bay area, plugging in the right personnel and convincing his players to buy in to his agenda. They've won 7 games in every imaginable way, from ugly (13-8 over Cincinnati, 19-11 over Washington), runaways (33-17 over Seattle, 48-3 over Tampa Bay), to grind-it-out (24-23 over Philadelphia, 25-19 over Detroit). QB Alex Smith has proven to be the perfect signal-caller for this team, never dazzling with big numbers, but never making the big mistake. RB Frank Gore has topped 100 yards in five straight games, and the receiving corps has been reliable and productive, especially TE Vernon Davis.

When the topic is the NFL's premier defenses, the talk usually centers around Baltimore, Pittsburgh or Green Bay, but the team that has allowed the fewest points at the halfway point is the San Francisco 49ers, giving up just 14.7 points per game. Led by LB Patrick Willis and DE Justin Smith, the Niners also have two future stars in LB Navarro Bowman and CB Carlos Rogers. Toss in two of the game's best kickers, P Andy Lee and PK David Akers, along with electrifying return man Ted Ginn, Jr., and it's hard to find a weakness.

Other than undefeated Green Bay, the Giants and the 49ers are looking like the cream of the NFC's crop. Eli Manning has silenced his naysayers (at least for now), and he has one of the league's most impressive receiving corps. The defense is still unpredictable, but they have the personnel to be a force. For the 49ers, they are riding a wave that the Bay area hasn't experienced since the 2010 San Francisco Giants, and Jim Harbaugh is looking more and more like a strong candidate for NFL Coach of the Year.

The Giants had a very good game a week ago, but they will play a much different team at least defensively this week when they go up against the 49ers. If they are not ready for a different look it could be a long week for the New York team and quarterback Eli Manning.
