St. Louis Rams vs. Cleveland Browns
St. Louis Rams vs. Cleveland Browns

In one of the weaker games on the NFL schedule, the St. Louis Rams and the Cleveland Browns will meet up on the football field. This game could have been between two teams battling to make the playoffs as fans had high hopes for both of these teams, but instead they are both spiraling towards the top of the NFL Draft by not winning many ballgames.

With kickoff scheduled for 1:00 PM at Cleveland Browns Stadium, the host Browns take on the visiting St. Louis Rams this Sunday. The early NFL odds favor the Browns, playing at home, by -1 1/2 points.

The Rams, picked by several prognosticators to contend in the NFC West, have instead suffered through a nightmarish season, high (or low)-lighted by injuries and miserable on-field performance. Just a week after their first victory of the season, a stunning 31-21 upset over the New Orleans Saints, the Rams once again sank back into their old ways, falling at Arizona this past Sunday, 19-13 in overtime. St. Louis had taken a 13-6 lead into the fourth-quarter, only to fall apart defensively and allowing Arizona to tie it up with just under 5 minutes remaining. The game then went into overtime, and after one Ram possession, Cardinals rookie DB Patrick Peterson returned a punt 99 yards to give Arizona (2-6) the win. Peterson's game-winner was his 3rd punt return for a score on the season, an NFL record for a player in his first 8 games. The loss dropped the Rams to 1-7, and snapped a six-game Cardinal losing streak.

There was optimism on the part of the St. Louis faithful due to the return of QB Sam Bradford, who'd sat out the previous 2 games with an ankle sprain. Bradford connected on 23 of 36 passes for 255 yards, but failed to reach the end zone. RB Steven Jackson, as has been the all-too-familiar case in recent years, was the mainstay of what offense the Rams could muster, picking up 130 yards on 29 carries. Recently acquired WR Brandon Lloyd had his second consecutive good outing for his new team, latching onto 5 passes for 80 yards.

On defense, the Rams turned in one of their most solid performances of 2011, limiting Arizona to 262 total yards, including just 70 on the ground. The defense also set an NFL record by scoring 4 points in the 3rd-quarter on 2 safeties. No other NFL team had ever done that. St. Louis also sacked Cardinals back-up QB John Skelton 3 times, one each by Chris Long, Robert Quinn and James Hall. The special teams breakdown on Peterson's punt return, however, made all the effort for naught.

The home-standing Cleveland Browns dropped to 3-5 this past Sunday after a 30-12 road shellacking at Houston. The Texans, featuring a pounding ground attack, jumped on the Browns early, bolting out to a 24-3 halftime lead and never allowing Cleveland to get back into the contest. Houston RBs Arian Foster (124) and his back-up, Ben Tate (115), combined for 239 yards on the afternoon. Cleveland managed only 172 yards and 10 first downs, routinely going three-and-out to the stifling Texas defense. QB Colt McCoy completed 14 of 22 passes for 146 yards, while the ground game, still absent featured back Peyton Hillis, who aggravated a hamstring in practice on Friday. Hillis' back-up, rookie Montario Hardesty, also didn't suit up, having suffered a torn calf muscle. Hillis, embroiled in an ugly contract dispute, is probably finished for the season, while Hardesty is hoped to return in 2-3 weeks. In their absence, rookie Chris Ogbonnaya started, and he fumbled on his first carry and finished the game with only 28 yards on 13 carries.

Houston's running game was so dominating that Texans QB Matt Schaub only attempted 23 passes on the afternoon, and their time of possession dwarfed Cleveland's, 35:15 to 24:45. When Cleveland did manage to pull off a positive play, such as Joshua Cribbs' 63-yard kickoff return, it was called back for a facemask infraction.

Not sure where the offense is going to come from in this game, since neither evokes flashbacks of recent offensive juggernauts such as Indianapolis or New England. As an example, St. Louis, after 8 games, is averaging 12.5 points per game, while Cleveland isn't much better, scoring 14.9 per contest. The game does re-unite QBs Bradford and McCoy, who enjoyed some thrilling matchups while in college, but this isn't the Big 12 anymore.

The signs are starting to show that maybe the Browns movement to youth is not complete and by adding more players in the draft they may be able to improve. Something similar could be said for the Rams as they struggle with injuries and the end result is losing plenty of games. Luckily for these team teams they play each other this week and one of them has to win.
