The latest sports betting odds on this game and every game in the NFL, can be found at the online sportsbook Bet Phoenix. Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium will be rocking this Sunday afternoon when the host Carolina Panthers take on the visiting Tennessee Titans in a scheduled 1:00 PM matchup. The Panthers are -2 1/2 point favorites according to the early NFL odds. The Titans come in at 4-4, a game and a half behind Houston in the AFC South after their 24-17 home loss to Cincinnati this past Sunday. The loss came despite Tennessee leading for most of the game, including a 17-7 halftime lead. They fell victim to Bengals rookie QB Andy Dalton's 3 TD passes, two in the second half, to deal the Titans their second home loss in a three-game stretch, before which they had hoped to stay abreast of the Texans or even pass them. Tennessee's offense disappeared in the second half after dominating the opening 30 minutes. The 3rd quarter, in particular, doomed the Titans, who were out-gained 97-8 during the period. QB Matt Hasselbeck completed 24 of 41 pass attempts for 217 yards and 2 TDs, and RB Chris Johnson, giving by far his best performance of the season, gained 64 yards on 14 rushing attempts after several weeks of contributing almost nothing to the offense. Defensively, Tennessee wasn't terrible, but came up short in critical situations, somewhat puzzling since the Titan's defense is a relatively experienced group and they were going against a rookie QB who was making just his eighth career start. Tennessee managed just one sack and 2 QB hits for the afternoon, their pass rush not a factor. Several costly penalties also hamstrung the Titans, and for the game, they received 7 flags totaling 100 yards in penalties. Coming off their bye week, the Carolina Panthers have managed to generate probably as much media buzz and interest as any 2-6 NFL team in history. All the attention can be attributed to rookie QB Cam Newton a front-runner for NFL offensive rookie of the year, whose first half numbers (2,393 yards, 11 TDs on 174 completions in 287 attempts) are on a pace to smash all existing NFL records for a rookie QB. In addition to his aerial accomplishments, Newton has also ran for 7 TDs, tying the NFL record, and the list of records for a rookie QB should all be his by season's end. Still, Carolina is just 2-6, although they've held a lead in the 4th-quarter in 4 of their defeats. The one-two running attack of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart has been contributing more production every week, and their success will only increase Newton's effectiveness. Veteran WR Steve Smith has had his career rejuvenated since Newton's arrival, so much so that he leads the NFL in average yards per catch. TEs Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen have also made huge contributions, while the offensive line is one of the most solid in the NFC Conference. It's on the defensive side that the Panthers have come up wanting, and that's due primarily to season-ending injuries to LBs Jon Beason and Thomas Davis. The Panthers have also been starting two rookie DTs, while one DE is in his second year and another his fourth. Once this unit gains more maturity and gets some of the wounded back, this will no longer be a weakness. Tennessee has developed a penchant in recent years for winning "ugly," but unfortunately, in 2011, they've flipped that to "losing" ugly. Chris Johnson's mysterious disappearance from being one of the league's elite running backs has been a major factor, while the season-ending loss of rising WR star Kenny Britt has weakened the passing game. For the Panthers, excitement and an explosive offense is nice, and has brought the fans back, but the "close but no cigar" label wears thin after awhile. It's obvious that Cam Newton despises losing, and as the rest of the team starts to adopt his winner's mentality, a bright future appears inevitable in Charlotte. The Carolina Panthers may be a very young team but they are steadily improving and now going up against the Tennessee Titans they get a chance to prove that they are headed in the right direction and can start winning football games.
