The Ducks drowned the 9-1, 7-1 Cardinal with relentless pursuit of the football on defense and break-neck play calling offensively. Stanford came in wanting to lay to rest an easy schedule, but it was the tested Oregon offense, defense and special teams who shined on the wet Palo Alto field. Cardinal players were slipping left and right while junior running back LaMichael James skated his way into the end zone three times Saturday night. Joining James on the scoreboard was sophomore linebacker Boseko Lokhombo courtesy of a 40-yard interception return and sophomore placekicker Alejandro Maldonado from 40 yards away through the uprights. Both of those scores came in the final 5:09 of the game as junior quarterback Darron Thomas threw three touchdowns as well earlier. One was to sophomore wide receiver Josh Huff, another to freshman RB De'Anthony Thomas and the first one of the day to senior WR Lavasier Tuinei. Following the Ducks' first strike Oregon surprised Stanford by going for and converting the two-point conversion. In a game that wrapped up about an hour before the Cardinal Vs. Ducks kicked off, USC bludgeoned 6-4, 4-3 Washington 40-17. The Trojans looked marred in a battle, but a ballsy fake punt play with junior punter Kyle Negrete running for a first down during the second quarter changed the entire landscape of the game. Leading 7-3 thanks to junior QB Matt Barkley's one-yard run, Southern Cal appeared willing to punt. Only problem was broken Husky special team coverage opened a lane in the center of the field for Negrete to burst through. Not only did the punter make the first down, but he got nearly 30 extra yards of real estate setting up senior RB Marc Tyler's one-yard strike. Then 1:05 later UW's sophomore quarterback Keith Price was thrown down in the end zone to make it 16-3 Trojans. Freshman WR Marqise Lee, who ran back the opening kickoff of the second half, caught a nine-yard flick from Barkley to make it 23-3 at the break. A few plays after the Huskies struck back, junior RB Curtis McNeal stampeded his way down the field for a 79-yard score. Three seconds into the fourth quarter Andew Heidari booted through the final points of the game for the Men of Troy. USC will be up for the biggest game of the year and the chance to pull off the upset as they try and go Duck hunting this weekend.
