Tennessee Titans vs. Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta's Georgia Dome plays host this Sunday at 4:15 PM for a meeting between the visiting Tennessee Titans and the Falcons. The Falcons are -5 1/2 point favorites, according to the early football betting lines.

The Titans made short work of the Carolina Panthers last Sunday, capitalizing on poor tackling and special team shortcomings in an easy 30-3 victory. Marc Mariani's 79-yard punt return TD less than 2 minutes into the game set the tone and Tennessee never was threatened. QB Matt Hasselbeck was efficient, not flashy, in completing 15 of 27 for 219 yards and a TD, but the big story for Tennessee was the performance of RB Chris Johnson. Johnson, inexplicably mediocre for the entire season, exploded for 130 rushing yards, by far his best showing of the season and reminding us of his once status. Also, WR Damian Williams, forced into the lineup after Kenny Britt's season-ending injury, is beginning to show his potential as a No. 1 receiver. The Southern Cal product hauled in 5 passes from Hasselbeck against Carolina, including a 43-yard first-quarter scoring toss.

Tennessee's defense used the "spy" technique against Carolina's Cam Newton, and the results were more than effective, sacking the mercurial QB 5 times as well as delivering 8 QB hits. The Titans also kept the potent Panthers out of the end zone, something no other opponent had done. Rookie LB Akeem Ayers was especially effective, recording 7 tackles and a sack, while CB Courtland Finnegan contained the NFL's leader in yardage-per-catch, Carolina's WR Steve Smith, to just 33 yards on 5 receptions.

Atlanta, arguably a candidate for the NFC's most "snake-bitten" team, added to their resume this past Sunday in a 26-23 overtime loss at home to New Orleans. Facing a 4th down deep in their own territory in the extra period, the Falcons surprisingly went for it, only to see RB Michael Turner come up short, giving the Saints the ball in excellent field position. The Saints ran 3 plays, advancing to the 8-yard line, and then John Kasay drilled a chip-shot 26-yard FG to improve New Orleans to 7-3 and drop the Falcons to 5-4.

The loss overshadowed a great outing for Atlanta QB Matt Ryan, who connected on 29 of 52 passes for a season-high 351 yards and 2 TDs. Turner led the Falcons ground game with 96 yards on 22 carries, while WR Harry Douglas (8 catches, 133 yards) and Allpro TE Tony Gonzalez (6 for 71) were keys to the passing attack. Speedy Falcon rookie WR Julio Jones, whose recent outstanding play has added a new dimension to the offense, went out early with an aggravated hamstring, leading to Douglas' increased contributions.

The Falcon defense shut down New Orleans' ground game (41 yards on 16 carries), but, as so many opposing defenses have learned, containing Drew Brees and his seemingly endless stable of receivers wasn't quite as easy. Brees (30 of 43, 322 yards, 2 TDs) routinely found open receivers amid the Atlanta defense, with the top targets being WR Marques Colston and TE Jimmy Graham, who combined for 15 receptions and 195 yards. The paltry running game has to concern coach Sean Payton, who was making his first sideline appearance in almost a month after suffering a broken leg and knee injury in an accidental collision with one of his players.

Both teams need a victory, perhaps the Falcons more so, since they are now a game-and-a-half behind the Saints in the NFC South Division, and although it's Vikings vs Falcons next week at home, with Minnesota at 2-7, they can ill afford to look past the Titans. Tennessee, battling for a possible wild-card berth in the AFC Conference, is also in need of every win they can get, and with the team traveling to Buffalo next week, nothing on their schedule (other than Indianapolis in 3 weeks)screams out, "sure win!." The Titans can only hope that Johnson's re-emergence wasn't a fluke, because their offense desperately needs some balance.

These are two teams that are in desperate need of a win and a big one, to show other teams that they are ready to make a run to make the playoffs.
