Carolina Panthers vs. Detroit Lions
Carolina Panthers vs. Detroit Lions

Carolina Panthers have a quality young team, but will get a big challenge this weekend when they go up against the Detroit Lions.

The latest odds for this exciting NFL game and all of the great wagering action on the gridiron can be found at Bet Phoenix.

Detroit's Ford Field plays host this Sunday afternoon for a meeting between the visiting Carolina Panthers and the home-standing Lions in a scheduled 1:00 PM contest. According to the early NFL odds the Lions are favored by -7 1/2 points.

After a bye week during which coach Ron Rivera had hoped would give the team a reinvigorated mental approach, the Carolina Panthers instead came out and gave their worst performance of 2011, falling behind early and never getting any traction in a resounding 30-3 home loss to Tennessee. Rookie QB Cam Newton, proving that despite his gaudy numbers during the season's first half, is still just a rookie even though he's been trying for NFL rookie of the year. He suffered his worst game, completing just 23 of 40 passes for 212 yards and an interception. The Titans sacked Newton 5 times and recorded 8 QB hits as they dropped the Panthers to 2-7. Carolina's ground game, often overlooked, gained 113 yards on 19 carries, led by Newton's 7 carries for 55 yards. WR Steve Smith, the league's yards-per-catch leader coming in, was shut down by Tennessee's pass defense, collecting just 33 yards on 5 receptions.

Special teams breakdowns and sloppy tackling plagued Carolina, especially early, when the Titans Marc Mariani returned a punt 79 yards for a score barely a minute into the game. Run defense, a Carolina weakness all season, was unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of Tennessee RB Chris Johnson's best performance of the year, 130 yards on 27 carries. Carolina could also do little with Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck, who went 15 for 27 for 219 yards.

The Detroit Lions, after causing the entire league to sit up and take notice after a 5-0 start, lost for the 3rd time in their last 4 games this past Sunday to NFC North rival Chicago, 37-13, and the margin of defeat was not indicative of how thoroughly the Bears manhandled them. The loss dropped Detroit to 6-3 and a second-place tie with Chicago, 2 1/2 games behind undefeated Green Bay. The Lions offense, one of the league's most explosive and efficient, was practically shut down by Chicago's defense, especially the ground game, which could muster but 80 yards on 19 carries. QB Matthew Stafford attempted an NFL-season high 63 passes, connecting on 33 for 329 yards, but suffered 4 interceptions, equaling his season total. Stafford was victimized on Detroit's first two second-half possessions with returned picks for scores, dashing all hopes for a Lion comeback.

Chicago's offense, which had been resurrected in recent weeks, was merely adequate on Sunday, but the interceptions, along with Devin Hester's 82-yard TD on a punt return, his NFL-record 12th in his career, provided a cushion that didn't require a lot of offense. The Lions defense, already deep in a hole due to the Chicago defensive and special teams heroics, simply couldn't make enough game-changing plays to ever be in contention.

Expect Cam Newton to be chomping at the bit to get rid of the bad taste the Tennessee game surely left, and the rookie has proven in his debut season that he responds well to disappointment. He needs to involve two of his most reliable weapons, TEs Greg Olson and Jeremy Shockey more than they were against the Titans.

Carolina's next game is at winless Indianapolis, so Rivera must keep his young squad focused on the game at hand. For Detroit, now that they've been caught by the Bears, can ill afford many more slip-ups if they want to make their great start succeed beyond "what if?" The return of RB Jahvid Best would help greatly, and better decision-making by Stafford also couldn't hurt. Packers vs Lions on Thanksgiving, giving the Panthers a slight advantage since the Lions have no doubt been looking forward to the Packers for quite some time. Carolina vs Detroit has the potential to be an offensive showcase, with both teams capable of putting up not only big numbers, but plenty of points.

The Panthers get a chance to go on the road and attempt to get an upset win and a signature win for the rookie quarterback.
