West Virginia has been living on the edge for most of the season with their tendency for slow starts regardless of the competition. That trend continued against Pittsburgh with the Mountaineers forced to come back from a 20-7 deficit to eek out the win and keep their Big East title hopes afloat. WVU didn’t have the big offensive day with only 357 yards and a 2 of 12 performance on third down while also losing three fumbles.

West Virginia tried to establish a productive rushing attack but the Panthers front seven were up to the task, allowing 113 yards on 30 carries for under four yards per carry. Dustin Garrison was the only source of yardage with an eleven carry 55 yard afternoon leaving the task of moving the chains on the shoulders of quarterback Geno Smith who didn’t disappoint with 22 completions on 31 attempts for 244 yards and 63 yard TD throw and catch to Stedman Bailey. However, it was a huge day for the West Virginia defense who gave up just 296 yards and 4 of 20 on third down while recording ten sacks.

South Florida continued their season ending downward spiral with a 34-24 defeat at the hands of visiting Louisville. Playing complete games for 60 minutes has been an issue for the Bulls this year and that trend showed no sign of ending with USF squandering a 17-3 first half lead. South Florida was outscored 31-7 to end the game behind an offense that struggled to move the ball and a defense that couldn’t get stops.

The Bulls totaled 311 yards but were 4 of 15 on third down while losing a pair of fumbles and throwing a pick. The pressing issue was establishing the run with BJ Daniels out but with less than 70 yards rushing yards that didn’t happen. That forced quarterback Bobby Eveld to the air more than the team wanted even though he performed reasonably well, completing 20 of 35 throws for 210 yards with a touchdown and interception. Stopping the Cardinals proved to be difficult with Louisville managing 373 yards and returning a kick for 54 yards while converting 9 of 18 on third down.

Both games need this win to make sure they can impress the bowls election committee and the loser could be in rough shape in the bowl picture.
