Qwest Field in Seattle is the scene for a Thursday night contest between the host Seahawks and the visiting Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff is slated for 8:30 PM, and the Eagles are -2 point favorites according to the opening NFL odds Virtually a consensus pick to rule the NFC's East division prior to the season, the Eagles have instead had a miserable 2011, their most recent loss this past Sunday to New England, 38-20, dropping them into a last-place tie in the division with the Redskins at 4-7, three games behind division-leading Dallas. Philadelphia is now all but eliminated from postseason contention and the Super Bowl, a swift and disappointing fall from their heady pre-season expectations. New England's Tom Brady surgically dissected the Eagle's defense with an NFL MVP performance, striking for 361 yards and 3 TDs en route to a 24-13 halftime advantage, then relying on their fast-improving defense to keep the Eagles at bay, surrendering only a meaningless score with 0:32 remaining in the game. New England improved to 8-3 with the win, leaving them in a four-way tie with Baltimore, Houston and Pittsburgh for the AFC's best won-loss mark. Vince Young, in his second straight start in place of the injured Michael Vick at QB for the Eagles, threw for 400 yards on 26 of 48 attempts, but the Eagle defense, once again, came up lacking in several clutch situations. LaSean McCoy, Eagle's RB who came in as the league's leading rusher, could only collect 31 yards on 10 carries going against the newly-tough Patriot run defense. The above-mentioned defense couldn't generate much pressure on Brady, a sure recipe for disaster given his accuracy and multiple options for his passes. Philadelphia sacked Brady just once, and delivered only 2 QB hits on the afternoon. Philadelphia also did themselves no favors by being whistled 10 times for penalties, totaling 60 yards. Safety Kurt Coleman was the Eagles' defensive mainstay, collecting 12 tackles. Seattle also endured a disappointing Sunday, losing at home to the Washington Redskins, 23-17. The normally stout Seahawk defense collapsed in the fourth-quarter, giving up 16 points in the period to the offensively-challenged 'Skins, punctuated by a 50-yard scoring toss from Rex Grossman to Anthony Armstrong on a 3rd-down-and-19 with just over six minutes remaining that sealed Seattle's fate. The loss dropped the Seahawks to 4-7, further diminishing their faint playoff hopes. QB Tavaris Jackson had a mediocre game, hitting on just 14 of 30 passes for 144 yards. Jackson also suffered an interception on Seattle's final drive. RB Marshawn Lynch provided the bulk of Seattle's offensive punch, gaining 111 yards on 24 carries, while also catching a 20-yard scoring pass on his only reception. Penalties (9 for 91 yards) and sloppy communication on defense (forcing them to waste 2 timeouts due to having the wrong personnel on the field) were also damaging factors as the team was seeking it's third straight win. Seattle's pass rush did deliver 9 QB hits on Grossman, but surrendered a career-best 108 yards rushing to unheralded Redskins' rookie RB Roy Helu. CBs Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman recorded interceptions against Grossman, but otherwise, Washington's QB had little difficulty in finding open receivers, connecting on 26 of 35 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns. With both teams virtually without postseason hope, this meeting could easily turn into a boring, "who-cares" affair. Observers keep waiting for Philadelphia to wake up and begin to resemble what many labeled as the "Dream Team" back in August. Philadelphia's next game, at Miami, at one time looked to be a "gimme" for coach Andy Reid's squad, but as November turns into December, it's suddenly the Dolphins that are playing like contenders. The Seahawks, five games behind NFC West-leading San Francisco with five games remaining, host St. Louis next Sunday, another team desperate for a victory. The Eagles must win or their season will be loss and they will go down as one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this year.
