Connecticut finally exploded on the scoreboard against Rutgers but it wasn’t completely through the efforts of the offense who managed who managed just 292 yards and 16 first downs. Instead it was the defense that handed the O six turnovers and asked them to make a few plays. That’s exactly what happened with the UConn production being plain vanilla overall. The Huskies kept the ball on the ground where they have the most success and the results were average with 47 carries producing 178 yards and less than four yards per tote. Lyle McCombs (20-95) was the most productive with 4 yard and 10 yard TD runs with Scott McCummings and Jonathan Jean-Louise combining for 89 yards on 20 tries with the former also scoring twice.

With an adequate rushing attack and the defense playing well, the Huskies didn’t need quarterback Johnny McEntee to do much more than protect the ball. Mission accomplished as McEntee completing 10 of 16 for 90 yards and no turnovers. The Connecticut defense gave up 430 yards but 92 came on one play. Aside from the turnovers this unit got on the scoreboard with a nine yard fumble return.

Cincinnati got back in the win column after back to back defeats behind a complete performance on both sides of the ball. It was far from the most explosive performance we’ve seen from this team on the year but the Bearcats don’t have Zach Collaros to lean on either. Cincinnati totaled 368 yards which is a bit ordinary for them but didn’t turn the ball over and received some nice yardage from the rushing attack to keep the pressure off the passing game.

The Bearcats ran for 189 yards for 4 1/2 yards per carry in what turned out to be a two man attack with Isaiah Pead going for 80 yards on 17 tries including a 24 yard scoring run while catching a 69 yard touchdown pass. Jordan Luallen gave the backfield another 77 yards on eight totes to give quarterback Munchie Legaux some much needed help. Legaux was 13 of 22 for 169 yards with a pair of scores and no picks. The Bearcats defense gave up 373 yards but held Syracuse to 4 of 15 on third down with 13 points allowed telling the story of their effort.

The Bearctas are going to the post season, and although the Huskies may not be going they are still playing with some pride.
