Chicago's Soldier Field, scene of so many legendary games, plays host this Sunday for a scheduled 1:00 PM contest between the Bears and the visiting Kansas City Chiefs. The early football betting lines favor Chicago by -8 points.

The Bears, who've made a practice out of winning games with their special teams, found themselves on the receiving end this past Sunday in Oakland when the Raiders used their strong kicking game to turn the tables on Chicago, 25-20, ending the Bears five-game winning streak. The loss made the Bears 7-4 and tied with Detroit for 2nd-place in the NFC North. The victory also improved the Raiders to 7-4 and a one game lead in the AFC West.

Playing with back-up QB Caleb Hanie, who's replacing Jay Cutler, out for the rest of the regular season with a broken thumb, the Bears came in with a six-game winning streak, but the efficiency and production of their offense was obvious from the start. Hanie completed 18 of 36 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also intercepted three times. His costliest mistake was probably late in the first half when the Bears were driving for an apparent go-ahead score, but an interception at the Raider 28 ended the drive. RB Matt Forte, the NFL leader in yards from scrimmage, found the yards tough to come by against Oakland's swarming defense, rushing for just 59 yards on 12 carries. WR Johnnie Knox was Chicago's biggest threat, hauling in 4 passes for 145 yards.

Chicago's bread-and-butter, their defense, certainly did their part, even though Raider QB Carson Palmer threw for 301 yards. The Bears sacked Palmer four times, including two by Julius Peppers, and delivered 5 QB hits on the Raider signal-caller. Oakland's punter, Shane Lechler had an excellent game, averaging 54.6 yards on five punts, including a booming 80-yarder, a Raider record. Lechler also kept the ball away from Chicago's Devin Hester, something several teams unfortunately wish they'd been able to do in 2011.

As "offenseless" a team as you'll find in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs continued their up-and-down 2011 season this past Sunday night with a hard-fought loss at home to Pittsburgh, 13-9. As the score indicates, the only scoring the Chiefs could muster were three field goals by Ryan Succop, as KC's injury issues once again left them without playmakers on offense. Back-up QB Tyler Palko, making his second start in place of the out-for-the-season Matt Cassel, was intercepted three times, and the Chief's ground game could pile up just 90 yards on 34 attempts. The loss virtually eliminated KC, last season's AFC West champions, from the postseason. At 4-7, KC now finds itself tied with San Diego for last place in the division.

Kansas City's defense performed well enough to come out on top against the Steelers, but their lack of offense continually left the defense with their backs against the wall. The Steeler offensive line, much-maligned for shoddy pass protection, brought their "A" game Sunday night, surrendering just 1 sack on Ben Roethlisberger, while providing enough run blocking for the Pittsburgh RBs to pick up 108 yards on 28 carries.

With both teams using back-up QBs, this matchup will more than likely resemble the Chiefs-Steelers contest, hard-hitting defense controlling struggling offenses. Chicago has more weapons, but without Cutler at the helm, those weapons are frequently rendered ineffective. Kansas City is talented defensively, and if they can get a few lucky breaks, are completely capable of pulling the upset. KC's remaining schedule is one of the NFL's most daunting, traveling to take on the New York Jets next week, and then winding up with meetings with Green Bay, Oakland and Denver, playoff hopefuls all.

The Bears visit Denver next week, certainly not an easy task in December, and are hopeful that Hanie will become more comfortable and mistake-free with the added experience. The Chiefs are still playing hard despite the fact that their season is loss, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Look for another good effort against the Bears this week.
