FedEx Field in suburban D.C. plays host this Sunday when the visiting New York Jets come in to take on the Washington Redskins in a scheduled 1:00 PM contest. The Jets, according to the early football betting lines, are favored by -3 points.

Still in playoff contention for the Super Bowl, but having very little margin for error, the Jets improved to 6-5 this past Sunday with a come-from-behind 28-24 victory over division rival Buffalo. Sitting two games behind AFC East leader New England, New York needed every one of QB Mark Sanchez's career-best four TD passes to overcome the Bills, and it wasn't until Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's last-play end zone pass fell incomplete that the hard-fought win was secured. Sanchez's final scoring pass, a 16-yarder to WR Santonio Holmes with 1:01 remaining, provided the final, winning points. RB Shonn Greene had a good game for the Jets, rolling up 78 yards on 13 carries, while Sanchez's other scoring passes went to Plaxico Burress and two TD tosses to TE Dustin Keller. The loss was Buffalo's fourth straight, dropping them to 5-6, disappointing after their unexpected 5-2 start.

Fitzpatrick enjoyed modest success against the Jets secondary, connecting on 26 of 39 passes for 264 yards and three scores, but the absence of RB Fred Jackson was an obvious detriment to the Bills ground attack efforts. Jackson, one of the league's pleasant surprises this season, was placed on injured reserve last week due to a leg injury, ending his season. His replacement, second-year RB C.J. Spiller, could amass just 55 yards on 19 carries. Jets LB Aaron Maybin, a former first-round draft pick for the Bills, had two of New York's three QB sacks on Fitzpatrick.

Just when the Washington Redskins had been pretty much written off, they pull a stunner like this past Sunday's road win over Seattle, 23-17. And just as the team is frequently dismissed as being a "non-factor," so is their latest QB, veteran Rex Grossman. Practically ran out of town in Chicago, the journeyman signal-caller appears to have found a home in the nation's capital. His 314 yards on 26 of 35 pass attempts and 2 TDs in Seattle proved that he still is fully capable of doing some damage to opposing defenses. He led the usually punchless Redskin offense to 16 unanswered fourth-quarter points on Sunday, upping the 'Skins won-loss mark to 4-7. His 50-yard scoring pass to WR Anthony Armstrong with 6:18 remaining gave Washington all they needed to pull off the improbable road victory. Another bright spot was rookie RB Roy Helu, who parlayed 23 carries into a career-best 108 yards and a touchdown. Helu also grabbed seven passes coming out of the backfield, good for 54 more yards.

Washington's almost-always solid defense bent plenty on Sunday, but stiffened up when they had to, overcoming 110 yards in penalties as well as a couple of near-miss special-teams breakdowns. One concern for head coach Mike Shanahan on the defensive side may have been Seattle's Marshawn Lynch's 111 rushing yards, an area that Washington generally excels in.

Certainly the Jets need this win more than Washington, but with Rex Grossman playing some of the best football of his checkered career, and with an aggressive, athletic defense, the Redskins are looking like the team that startled observers at the beginning of the season when they broke out to a 3-1 start before dropping six straight.

They host Tom Brady and the Patriots next week, but at this point in the season, looking ahead isn't applicable for a 4-7 team. The Jets play host to Kansas City next Sunday, then wind up with road games at Philadelphia and Miami, sandwiched around a contest with their MetLife Stadium "lease-mates," the New York Giants.

The Redskins won as an underdog a week ago and now have the edge in confidence heading into thisa game as the Jets have one eye on next week.
