The St. Louis Rams take on the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday in an NFC West division match-up. This match-up isn't like most of the ones that take place in the NFC West these days. The Niners are the dominant team in the division and come into the game at 9-2, with their only losses coming in week 2 and last week against the Ravens.

As for St. Louis, they have proven that they are one of the most inept teams in the league. They lost back to back home games against the Cardinals and Seahawks, who are also NFC West foes, and should have been winnable games. Instead, St. Louis has shown that the team has regressed from last season, and Sam Bradford is certainly not playing as well as he did as a rookie.

Why is San Francisco playing so well this season? Well, it all starts with the play of Alex Smith. He was given up for dead after never really seeming to understand how to play quarterback in the NFL. However, Smith was a first overall pick, which means he was given time. Now, at just age 27, but with seven years in the league, he is finally coming into his own. His QB rating is 16 points above his career average and he is completing over 60 percent of his passes this year.

Frank Gore and Micheal Crabtree are the two favorite weapons in the Niners offense. Gore is poised to have a 1,000 yard season rushing and Crabtree is also going to come close to 1,000 yards receiving.

On defense, the Niners like to go smash mouth and play physical. Cornerback Carlos Rogers looks like he will go to his first Pro Bowl this season. He is another first round pick who is finally showing what he can do in the league.

For the Rams to have any hope of winning the game on Sunday, they need to have a good game out of Stephen Jackson. He needs to go for at least 100 yards to keep the chains moving and keep the team in a position to win. When Jackson has a chance put up the most rushing yards this week in the NFL, his Rams are much more likely to win. Brandon Lloyd needs to step up as he has been doing of late and make some plays in the passing game.

More importantly, the defense needs to have a solid game for the Rams. They don't have a lot of playmakers, so it will take a team effort and attention to scheme in order to neutralize the 49ers attack.

The 49ers are looking to win this game in order to secure the number 2 seed in the NFC Conference behind the Green Bay Packers. If they do win, they will keep a one game lead over the New Orleans Saints and keep their hopes alive for a home playoff game and a good run at the Super Bowl.

For the Rams, their season ended weeks ago, and the only drama surrounding their next game against Seattle is whether or not Steve Spagnolo is going to keep his job for the rest of the season. St. Louis already lost their first meeting against Seattle 24-7 in one of their worst games of the season.

As for the Niners, they are going to Arizona next week with another winnable NFC West game coming up. This could be a time where San Francisco simply starts to rest starters who might be banged up, as a division title is all but locked up at this point.

The opening NFL odds for this Sunday has the 49ers as a 15 point favorite. It should come as no surprise as this game should be a mismatch on paper from the start.

The 49ers are in line for a big win against the Rams, but anything can happen in the NFL.
