Tampa's Raymond James Stadium is the scene this Sunday for an NFC South tilt between the visiting Carolina Panthers and the host Buccaneers. The game is slated to kickoff at 1:00 PM, and the early football betting line leans towards the Bucs by -1 1/2 points. The Panthers picked up their third victory of the season this past Sunday at Indianapolis, 27-19 over the winless Colts. The road win was the first for Carolina in more than two years, and improved their won-loss mark to 3-8. Carolina utilized an aspect of their offense that's frequently been absent this season, the running game. Jonathan Stewart (10 carries for 70 yards), DeAngelo Williams (15 carries, 69 yards, 2 TDs), and possible NFL offensive rookie of the year candidate QB Cam Newton (9 carries, 53 yards, 1 TD) all played big roles as the Panthers racked up a season-high 201 yards on the ground. Newton, too often forced to bear the brunt of offensive production in his rookie season, had one of his more productive and effective passing games as well, completing 20 of 27 passes for 208 yards, and more importantly, zero interceptions. A recent surprise weapon for the Panthers has been the play of kick returner Kealoha Pilares, a rookie out of Hawaii. He had a 101-yard kickoff return against Detroit two Sundays ago, and nearly duplicated that against Indianapolis, returning a kickoff 76 yards before being run out of bounds by the Colt's kicker, Pat McAfee. Carolina's defense wasn't kind to Colts QB Curtis Painter, picking off Peyton Manning's fill-in twice, the most important one coming on a tipped ball in the back of the end zone on Indianapolis' last-gasp fourth-down attempt. S Sherrod Martin, atoning somewhat for a missed tackle earlier which allowed WR Reggie Wayne to score a touchdown, gathered in the deflected pass on the backline to secure the win. Linebackers Jordan Senn and James Anderson, rarities in that neither have missed a game this season, combined for 20 tackles to lead the Carolina defense. Few units league-wide have been as snake-bitten by injuries as the Panthers LB corps. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers collapsed in the fourth-quarter this past Sunday against Tennessee, giving up 13 unanswered points to fall, 23-17, dropping them to 4-7 on the season. Bobbled snaps, dropped passes and two costly fumbles by RB LaGarrette Blount doomed the Bucs, who entered the final period leading, 17-10. QB Josh Freeman committed the final error, mishandling a snap on fourth-and-1 with 0:40 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Titans. On the afternoon, Tampa Bay lost four fumbles, plus surrendering an interception. Tampa's defense forced four turnovers themselves, including a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown by CB Aqib Talib. The Bucs run defense was also lacking, giving up 190 yards to Tennessee's Chris Johnson, the biggest chunk of th 202 the Titans gained on the ground for the afternoon. Losing standout DT Gerald McCoy to injury late in the season has wreaked havoc with Tampa's run defense. This game could be a showcase for two of the NFL's rising young QB stars, Josh Freeman and Cam Newton. They are similarly-sized, athletic, strong-armed signal-callers, with Newton perhaps having an advantage when he takes off running. The Carolina coaching staff, seeing how successful they were running the ball against the Colts, and aware that Chris Johnson decimated the Bucs run defense for 190 yards, may resort to a run-heavy attack again this Sunday. Tampa, a pre-season darkhorse favorite, has shot itself in the foot far too often this season. These two teams meet again in Charlotte three weeks down the road, with the Bucs traveling to in-state rival Jacksonville next Sunday. Carolina has a home rematch with Atlanta next Sunday, then travel to Houston the following week to take on the AFC South-leading Texans. The Panthers look like a very good young team, and every win that they get to end the season will only build their confidence for next year.
