The Atlanta Falcons take on the Houston Texans in a huge game in Houston. Both teams are looking to solidify playoff positioning down the stretch and take advantage of some teams that are falling around them. This should be an interesting game considering the injury problems that the Texans have had at the quarterback position. The Texans lost starter Matt Schaub to injury two weeks ago and had to put him on the IR, meaning he is done for the season. Last week, backup Matt Leinart was injured and he is also done for the season. That means that the Texans will be going into this game with T.J Yates as their starting quarterback for the time being. This will put Houston at a bit of a disadvantage. However, the Texans do have running back Arian Foster, who is only the best running back in the league right now. He is almost a lock for almost 200 yards from scrimmage every single game he plays. He is a treat to run the ball and can break a short pass into a long touchdown. Ben Tate is another great runner on the Texans squad who could take the pressure off of Yates and the passing game. The Falcons have played some good football as of late too. They have have won 3 out of their last 4 with the only loss coming at home to New Orleans in a game where they gambled on 4th down instead of kicking a game tying field goal. Otherwise, the defense has been effective and the offense has been doing just enough to win. Atlanta's defense has given up just under 13 points in their victories over the past month, and gave up 16 a game overall through the past 4 games. This will always give your team a chance to win no matter who you are. This game will be a huge test for the Atlanta defense, and should be a playoff-like game for both teams, meaning that the players will be even more amped up to play. On offense, look for the Falcons to try to mix up the run and the pass. They like to set up plays where they can air it out to guys like Harry Douglas and Julio Jones. While Jones has been ineffective in recent weeks, he is still a playmaker who can go deep when he needs to. Roddy White has also been rounding into form as he has caught more balls in the past few weeks. While a win for Houston will be important, they have the clearer road to the playoffs as of right now. At 8-3, they have a 2 game lead over the Titans in the AFC south, and no other team is even challenging them as of right now. For the Falcons, they desperately need a win to keep pace with the Bears and Lions, even if both teams have issues of their own. If Atlanta wins this game, they will have proven to be a contender after starting the season off slowly. Houston follows up this game with a trip to Cincinnati to face the Bengals who are also looking like a playoff team this year. As for Atlanta, they will go to Carolina to take on Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers might have a poor record, but they are a dangerous team that has taken many teams to the brink this year. The opening NFL odds have Atlanta as a 2.5 point favorite for the game against Houston this week. That is a little surprising seeing the home team as the underdog in a situation like this. The running game of the Texans should be enough to keep them in the game against Atlanta, but the birds seem to have the edge.
