| NFL Week 14 Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers |
The latest odds for this game and all of the other exciting games in week 14 in the NFL can be found at the top rated sportsbook, Bet Phoenix. Gametime is set for 1:00 PM this Sunday at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium for an NFC South matchup betweenthe visiting Atlanta Falcons and the host Carolina Panthers. This will be the second meeting of 2011 for th e division rivals, and the early betting line favors the Falcons by -3 points. Atlanta suffered a costly defeat this past Sunday at Houston, falling 17-10 to the Texans, dropping them to 7-5 on the season, two games behind the division-leading New Orleans Saints. Despite going against a rookie fifth-round QB (T.J. Yates) making his NFL debut, the Falcons played sluggishly all afternoon and could never gain any traction against the NFL's top-ranked defense. QB Matt Ryan (20 of 46, 267 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs) was plagued by over-throws, dropped passes and a ferocious Texans pass rush. Although Ryan avoided being sacked, he instead suffered 10 QB hits. The Falcons ground game was also mediocre at best, able to gain only 70 yards for the afternoon, led by Michael Turner's 44 yards. Even with TE Tony Gonzalez (7 catches, 100 yards), WR Julio Jones (4 for 68), and WR Roddy White (4 for 51) combining for 15 receptions and 219 yards, they could find the end zone just once. Perhaps more disturbing and worrisome to the coaching staff was the Atlanta run defense, which came in ranked third in the NFL, allowing an average of 90 yards per game. Against Houston however, those numbers were slammed as the Texans rolled up 162 yards, paced by Arian Foster's 111, the first opposing rusher to go over the century mark against Atlanta this season. Rookie QB Yates, despite being sacked three times, kept his composure and managed the offense admirably in leading the Texans to their franchise-record sixth straight victory. Defensive penalties also played a major factor in Atlanta's defeat, including an interception return for a TD by LB Mike Peterson being wiped out by a holding call. Coming in off of their first winning streak of the season (two straight), as well as their second straight road win, the Panthers are playing, at least offensively, as well as any team in the NFC. This past Sunday's 38-19 road win at Tampa upped their record to 4-8, and showed the incredible potential this team has with QB Cam Newton running the show. The mercurial rookie scored three TDs himself, the last (his 13th) setting an NFL record for TDs scored by a QB, breaking Steve Grogan's 36-year old record. Newton didn't rely strictly on his legs however, also connecting on 12 of 21 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown to WR Legedu Naanee. Newton even recorded his first career reception, a 27-yard flea-flicker. Carolina rushed for 163 yards on the day, led by Jonathan Stewart's 80 on 14 carries. Carolina's offensive efficiency was highlighted by their 100% red-zone efficiency (5 for 5). In dealing the slumping Buccaneers their sixth straight loss, Carolina flexed some frequently-absent defensive muscle, surrendering 285 total yards, sacking Bucs QB Josh Johnson (subbing for the injured Josh Freeman) twice, and giving up only 78 yards rushing. The Panthers were also aided by sloppy Tampa Bay play, being penalized nine times for 73 yards. The Falcons certainly need a win more than Carolina does, but something tells us that doesn't mean the Panthers will be gracious and generous hosts. With every aspect of their offense clicking smoothly, these late-season Panthers would be a tough out for any team. Be certain that the coaching staff took note of Houston's success at running the ball against Atlanta, while the Falcons will have their hands full trying to contain Cam Newton. Atlanta hosts Jacksonville next week, and the Jaguars have already proven they are capable of upsetting a "big boy" (Baltimore, Week 7). The Panthers next travel to Houston to take on the Texans before closing out the season with rematches with the Bucs and New Orleans. The Falcons need to have healthy pieces on offense if they hope to compete with the Panthers or any other team in the NFL right now.

The Carolina Panthers are quietly putting together some impressive wins on the season, and the Atlanta Falcons hope they are not the next victim.
