Jacksonville's EverBank Field plays host to an inter-state matchup this Sunday when the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jaguars meet for a scheduled 1:00 PM contest. The early betting line foresees a close game, with the Bucs favored by -1 point.

Mired in a six-game winless streak, Tampa's 2011 hasn't turned out as successful as many predicted prior to the season. Picked as a darkhorse contender in the NFC South due to their strong finish in 2010, plus with a young, talented roster led by QB Josh Freeman, RB LaGarrette Blount and an athletic, physical defense, the Bucs have instead fallen victim to injuries, shoddy play and a seeming loss of confidence. They were manhandled this past Sunday at home by the Carolina Panthers, 38-19, being out-performed in virtually every phase of the game. The Bucs were without Freeman, sidelined with a shoulder injury, and his replacement, Josh Johnson, performed fairly well, completing 16 of 27 for 229 yards and a touchdown, as well as topping the Bucs ground game with 45 yards on 5 carries. Blount, who'd topped the 100-yard mark in the Bucs two previous games, was held to just 19 yards on 11 carries by the fired-up Panther defense. In an off-the-field development, Blount was implicated in a September incident in which the second-year RB was accused of assault by a Bucs fan following a traffic altercation. Blount denies the allegation, and Tampa management has no comment.

Back on the field, Tampa's defense, generally considered as one of the rising "star" units of the NFC, found itself incapable of containing Carolina QB Cam Newton on Sunday, allowing the rookie QB to score 3 TDs, bringing his season total to 13, an NFL record for a QB. Carolina's 163 rushing yards kept the chains and clock moving. One defensive bright spot for the Bucs was the play of rookie DE Da'Quan Bowers, who recorded 1 1/2 sacks and had 5 tackles for loss.

In their first game since the firing of head coach Jack Del Rio, the Jaguars started out energized and apparently more than ready to make a late-season push to atone for a disappointing season. The "newness" soon wore off and unable to contain San Diego QB Philip Rivers' accurate darts into an injury-depleted secondary and instead lost at home on Monday night, 38-14, dropping them to 3-9 while ending the Chargers' six-game losing skid. Rookie QB Blaine Gabbert connected on 19 of 33 passes for 195 yards and two TDs, and RB Maurice Jones-Drew, the NFL's leading rusher (1,137 yards), totaled 188 yards rushing/receiving combined, but that was the extent of the Jags offense, which has been the story all season.

Despite going against a retreaded, patchwork Charger offensive line, Jacksonville's pass rush was unable to apply pressure on Rivers, giving the savvy QB more than sufficient time to pick-and-choose his targets. LB Paul Posluszny was all over the field for Jacksonville, recording 11 tackles, but injuries to key personnel in the secondary and poor zone execution doomed the Jaguars efforts.

With neither team even within shouting distance of the postseason, this game boils down to pride and professionalism. The Jaguars have some skilled players offensively, just not as many as practically every other NFL team. A serious upgrade is required for this team to become reasonably competitive, much less a contender.

For the Bucs, the pieces are still in place, it's just a matter of being on the positive side of some good fortune as well as allowing all of their young, inexperienced players to mature. The Bucs host a potentially desperate Dallas team next week before closing out 2011 with road games at Carolina and Atlanta. Jacksonville visits Atlanta next Sunday in what should be an ultra-crucial game for the Falcons' playoff hopes. The Jags then travel to Tennessee before closing out at home against division rival Indianapolis.

The Jaguars are starting to gel as a young team and they have a solid defense, meanwhile the Bucs seem to be crashing down to earth and have no chance of turning this around.
