The Wyoming Cowboys are one of the better stories this season as there weren’t really any expectations this season and Dave Christensen’s team ended up winning eight games. Thing started out bleak for Wyoming as projected starting QB Colby Kirkegaard was injured right out of the gate and freshman Brett Smith was forced to step in. Smith was simply outstanding completing 60.5 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions while also rushing for 645 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Alvester Alexander is averaging 4.7 yards per carry and Brandon Miller is averaging 5.5 to lead the Cowboys running attack. With Chris McNeil gone for the year Robert Herron and Mazi Ogbanna will need to pick up the slack but Wyoming spread the ball around all season with six receivers catching 20 or more passes. Defensively Wyoming had 22 sacks, 18 fumble recoveries, and 13 interceptions for a plus 15 turnover ratio, The Cowboys’ defense also allowed 27 points per game and 432.2 yards including 230.1 yards per game on the ground. Luke Ruff has 97 tackles, Gabe Knapton has 6.5 sacks, and Blair Burns has four interceptions. Wyoming has been a team that has come a long way and has overcome a lot of adversity and just making it to a bowl game is a huge accomplishment.

For the second year in a row Temple returns to a bowl game as a football program that looked to be dead just a few years ago continues to build. The Owls won eight games this year and finished the season with three consecutive wins. Chester Stewart and Mike Gerardi both see time as QB with Stewart completing 65.1 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions and Gerardi completing 50.8 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and two interceptions. Bernard Pierce had a monster year on the ground gaining 1,381 yards and scoring 25 touchdowns.

Evan Rodriguez caught 33 passes and scored twice and Joe Jones caught 27 passes and scored three times as Temple is a team that relies on and leans on the run. Defensively Temple has 32 sacks, 12 interceptions, and six fumble recoveries for a plus six turnover ratio while they allow 13.8 points per game and allow 315.5 yards per game. Stephen Johnson has 113 tackles, Adrian Robinson has six sacks, and Kevin Kroboth has 71 tackles. The temple defense will be tested in this one while the running game will have room to run.

This game filled with rushing superstars should get the college football bowl season started in the right direction with a great game to watch and wager on.
