Two of the better off-the-radar offenses matchup at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 17. The 9-4, 6-3 Ohio Bobcats and 7-5, 5-2 Utah State Aggies take their run first oriented offense to Boise to play for conference bragging rights between the MAC and the WAC. Ohio finished as runner-ups in the Mid-American Conference courtesy of winning five games at the end of the year to reach the MAC Championship. However the 'Cats couldn't close the door on 10-3, 7-2 Northern Illinois who nudged past Ohio with a 33-yard field goal at the gun. The Huskies trailed 20-0 at halftime, but the Ohio offense who looked so impressive during the first half sputtered during the second as the defense got exhausted from returning the field so often. The Bobcats' ball control offense got a little too conservative after halftime which cost them the win. Junior placekicker Matt Weller kicked short 30 and 21-yard field goals the first 20 minutes of the ballgame, but on Ohio's only drive of the second half that gained more than 13 yards, Weller missed from 36 yards away. The 'Cats drove 61 yards on 11 plays during that on drive while punting four times and throwing a pick in five other drives for just 12 yards. As well Ohio's defense gave up more than quadruple what they yielded during the first half, just 77 yards. Scoring for the Bobcats besides Weller was sophomore wide receiver Donter Foster from senior quarterback Phil Bates and sophomore QB Tyler Tettleton on an 18-yard run. USU conversely is even better on offense although they are more reliant on the run gaining nearly 278 yards a game compared to just 181 yards of passing. Ohio gains 202 yards of offense on the ground and 251 through the air for six yards less of offensive real estate per game. This game will be more entertaining than people think as these two teams clash in one of the first games of the college football bowl season.
