Toledo makes their second consecutive postseason appearance after a second place finish in the MAC West behind Northern Illinois. The Rockets could be in a bit of disarray after head coach Tim Beckham was hired to take over the top spot at Illinois with rumors that several assistants might join him. We’ll see if the momentum Toledo has built up can carry them as the Rockets have won three straight and seven of eight overall. If the Rockets are to succeed, it’s nearly a sure bet that the offense will be leading the way with the number eight attack that rolled up 494 yards and over 42 points with both the ability to run or pass. Toledo is fortunate to have two solid signal callers although Austin Dantin might not be available with a concussion. On the year Dantin completed 120 of 185 throws for 1,399 yards with 15 touchdowns and three picks while Terrance Owens went 147 of 206 for an identical 15 scores against a trio of interceptions on 71.4% completions. Eric Page was one of the best receivers in the game with 111 catches for 1,114 yards and ten trips to the end zone while Bernard Reddy was option two with 36 receptions for 632 yards and six scores. Adonis Thomas caught 28 balls out of the backfield with Kenny Stafford hauling down 20 more receptions for 256 yards while four others totaled over 100 yards in receiving. Thomas was the big gun in the rushing attack with 955 yards and 11 TD’s on 148 carries with Morgan Williams providing 670 yards on 132 totes with 11 scores. David Fluellen was right in the mix with 93 tries and 473 yards while QB Williams added 209 Yards on 40 carries. Overall the Toledo defense wasn’t strong, giving up 401 yards and 31 points with 278 yards coming through the air as teams didn’t try to run on them with regularity. Air Force comes in to this match up with some momentum of their own as winners of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy while also grabbing their fifth consecutive postseason appearance which is a program best. The Falcons closed the regular season with victories in four of their last five which only landed them a fifth place finish in the top heavy Mountain West. Air Force racked up the yards with 459 ranking them #19 which resulted in 34 points per contest with bulk of the production coming from the nation’s second ranked rushing attack that accounted for 320 yards. Quarterback Tim Jefferson didn’t put the ball in the air very often but was reasonably effective when he did, completing 98 of 161 throws for 1,478 yards for 12 touchdowns and six interceptions on nearly 61%. Zack Kauth was the big yardage man with 543 yards on 27 receptions for four touchdowns and 20.1 yard average. Jonathan Warzeka brought in 27 balls for 392 yards and three scores while Mikel Hunter and Joshua Freeman combined for 26 catches for 375 yards and three TD’s. The bread and butter option of the Air Force was tough to control as usual with Asher Clark leading the team with 1,096 yards on 151 carries with six touchdowns and over seven yard average. The difference in this game could be how the Rockets handle the tough and rugged run-option that the Air Force Falcons bring to the game.
