Texas started off to a strong start this season with a perfect 4-0 record; however after suffering a crushing defeat to their rival the Oklahoma Sooners, things started to unravel quickly for this young Texas squad. The quarterback position for the Longhorns was occupied by a number of different players, but at the end of the season the signal caller with the best numbers was Colt McCoy's younger brother Case McCoy.

The Texas passing game never really found its wings as the Longhorns are ranked 85th in the nation in passing yards per game with 193.6, but the ground game for the Longhorns has been effective as Texas rushes for a solid average of 210 yards per game, ranking them 19th in the nation. The Longhorns always seem to field a strong defense, and the youth in that unit really showed this season as the Longhorns are giving up an average of 23 points per game, 42nd in the nation.

The Cal Golden Bears finished 6-5 in their first season in the newly reformed Pac-12. Cal started out 3-0 against lesser competition, but once they started their Pac-12 schedule the Bears dropped their next three, and it was back and forth the rest of the season including losses to the UCLA Bruins and Stanford Cardinal. The Bears run a balanced offensive attack, gaining over 250 yards per game though the air and 167 yards on the ground ranking them right in the middle of the NCAA in both categories.

Defensively, the Bears give up an average of 24.4 points per game; right on par with their opponent in the Holiday Bowl the Texas Longhorns, ranking the Bears 52nd in the nation.

Cal has played well defensively on the season, but they have yet to put together a complete game, but hope that changes when they play against Texas.
