The Seminoles finished the season a disappointing 8-4. The Seminoles started the season off right with two wins, but then FSU was defeated by Oklahoma at home, and then continued to lose their next two contests, one against Clemson and the next against Wake Forest, starting FSU out to a poor 2-3 record, which even though FSU did recover from and finish the season strong winning six of seven, it wasn't enough to take the ACC. Under center for the Seminoles this season was the playmaker EJ Manuel.

Manuel put up nice numbers for the Seminoles this season as FSU averaged over 250 yards per game through the air, ranking them 35th in the nation. One of the biggest changes this season for FSU was not their offense, but the defense which ranks fourth in the nation allowing just 15.2 points per game. The Seminoles will be challenged in this one as Chip Kelly will deploy his spread attack against the FSU defense, and the best way to attack Kelly's offense is to pressure the quarterback, and that will more than likely be job one of the Seminoles against the Irish.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were in the same boat as the Seminoles to start the season as the Irish were considered to be one of the top teams in the nation. The Irish started things off on a sour note this past season with a loss to USF in week one, and then that loss was followed up immediately with a loss to the much improved Michigan Wolverines in their annual rivalry game. There was some quarterback controversy in South Bend this season, but at the end of the day the job was won by Tommy Rees. Rees did put up strong numbers for the Irish offense, but not quite the stats were accustomed to seeing from a Brian Kelly offense.

Notre Dame finished the season ranked 33rd in the nation in passing yards per game with an average of 258.1, but the ground game struggled all season long as Notre Dame averaged 166 yards per game. The Irish played strong defense all season long, however there is a definite advantage here for the Seminoles as the Irish allowed an average of 20.9 points per game, more than five points per game on average than their Champs Sports Bowl opponent.

Both of these teams would like to get a win in this bowl game so it will help them with recruiting as they look forward to next season.
