Western Michigan finished third in the MAC West behind Toledo and Northern Illinois as the Broncos won three of their last four to save their season. WMU was the #22 team in total yards with 456 while lighting up the scoreboard to the tune of over 35 points. This offense does one thing well and that’s throw the ball with nearly 329 yards per game for the #8 unit in the game. Quarterback Alex Carder was probably the best pure passer in the MAC as he threw for 3,434 yards while completing 299 of 445 throws for 28 touchdowns and ten interceptions on 67.2% completions. Jordan White was the nations top receiver with 128 receptions for 1,646 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Chleb Ravenell and Robert Arnheim each caught 59 balls for a combined 1,521 yards and 12 scores with Eric Monette and Josh Schaffer added nearly 500 yards on another 43 receptions. Running the ball was something that Western Michigan did on occasion but was not something they were remotely good at. Tevin Drake led the rushing attack with only 570 yards on 101 carries with four touchdowns with Brian Fields providing some help with 285 yards on just 65 totes. Carder added 253 yards on a variety of short runs an QB sneaks but wasn’t a running threat.

Purdue is in their first Bowl since 2007 when the Boilermakers defeated Central Michigan 51-48 in this very same Bowl. Purdue won two of their last three including a win over rival Ohio State to become Bowl eligible behind an ordinary offense that averaged 371 yards and was middle of the row in most categories. The passing attack wasn’t explosive but it wasn’t a disaster either with Miami transfer Robert Marve getting some snaps and completing 55 of 102 throws for 557 yards with three touchdowns with five picks. Caleb TerBush emerged as the best option with 1,803 yards on 163 of 264 completions with 12 TD’s and six interceptions.

The passing attack was almost receiver by committee with Antavian Edison grabbing 43 balls for 561 yards with three scores while Justin Siller caught 45 passes for 429 yards. OJ Ross, Crosby Wright and Gary Bush combined for 72 receptions for 800 yards and seven scores. The Boilermakers can run the ball somewhat with Ralph Bolden pacing the rush with 674 yards on 148 totes but he hurt his knee against Indiana and might not be available. Akeem Shavers added 370 yards on 89 totes with Akeem Hunt and totaling 241 yards on 27 tries with somebody needing to step up if Bolden is out. The Purdue gave up 388 yards and 26 points on defense and excelled versus the pass where opposing quarterbacks averaged 203 yards through the air.

The game may not have the best name, but it could very well have one some good reasons to watch as both of these teams fight for a bowl victory.
