Brigham Young's last win was 41-20 at 6-7, 3-4 Hawaii assuring the Warriors wouldn't be going bowling this year. The Cougars only led for about seven minutes during the first half, but after they scored with 11:13 left in the third quarter BYU would never fall behind again. Scoring for the Cougs as junior quarterback Riley Nelson to freshman wide receiver Ross Apo twice including the first strike after halftime. Sophomore placekicker Justin Sorensen also sank two field goals and missed two while junior defensive back Joe Sampson picked up a 26-yard fumble for a score to make it 24-13 5:24 into the second half. As well senior running back Bryan Kariya ran one in as Nelson also found sophomore WR Cody Hoffman from 38 yards out at the end of the third period. Similar to Brigham Young Tulsa started the season cold as ice losing three of their first four games, albeit to the BCS' No. 7 Boise State, No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 3 Oklahoma State. The Hurricane's only loss at the end of the year came against No. 19 Houston at Tulsa 48-16. Had the Golden Hurricane who led early 7-0 and 10-6 won Tulsa would have played No. 21 Southern Mississippi for the Conference-USA Championship. Anyhow the Hurricane struck right away on senior QB G.J. Kinne's 11-yard flip to junior RB Willie Carter as senior PK Kevin Fitzpatrick booted through a 52-yarder at the end of the first quarter. Only a 12-1, 8-1 Cougar TD happened during the second quarter as Tulsa pulled closer midway through the third on a pair of Fitzpatrick FGs. Too bad Houston scored the final 28 points to sulk the game away. Now with two teams looking to end the season on a good note, the Armed Forces bowl should provide plenty of fireworks for these two teams.
