The Oklahoma Sooners were a favorite to win the BCS Championship at the beginning of the season, but poor defensive play and injuries at key positions cost the Sooners, as Oklahoma finished the season a disappointing 9-3. Landry Jones was in the Heisman race for the majority of the season for the Sooners, but once Jones lost his favorite target Ryan Broyles, the OU quarterback has had trouble moving the ball effectively. Oklahoma has put up impressive numbers through the air this season as the Sooners are averaging over 365 yards per game through the air, but those numbers have been dropping lately with Oklahoma having trouble getting the ball downfield to their deep threat Kenny Stills now that Broyles is out.

The defense was supposed to be strong this season and was considered to be one of the best in the nation at the beginning of the season; however the Sooners have struggled allowing an average of 22.8 points per game this season, including 41 points to Texas Tech, 45 points to Baylor, and 44 points to their rival Oklahoma State. The Sooners will be facing a more conventional style offense with the Hawkeyes, but if OU is unable to contain Marcus Coker the talented back for Iowa, it could be another long day for this unit.

The Iowa Hawkeyes were off the Big Ten radar coming into this season and normally that means big things for the Hawks as Iowa seems to play better when no one is talking about them. This was James Vandenberg's first season under center for the Hawkeyes as the Iowa quarterback is filling the shoes of Ricky Stanzi who is now on the sidelines for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Vandenberg has talent and has looked excellent at times, and if the Hawkeyes can establish an effective ground game with Coker, and keep the OU defenders out of Vandenberg's face, the Hawkeyes should be able to move the ball through the air against the OU secondary. Defensively Iowa has taken a step back for sure this season after losing key players to the NFL last year. Iowa ranks 42nd in the nation in points allowed, giving up an average of 23.3 points per game. The biggest test for the Hawkeyes against the Sooners will be the pace OU sets, as Oklahoma is one of the fastest teams in the nation when they go quick, and look for a few illegal substitution penalties and unnecessary timeouts due to the fast pace of OU.

Iowa will try to catch Oklahoma snoozing through this game as they have their sights set on a bigger game in the future.
