Cincy may be the best team in the Big East yet relegated to a second-rate bowl game possibly because of a 45-23 loss at 5-7, 1-7 Tennessee on Sept. 10. The 'Cats then went on a six-game winning streak until losing 24-21 to No. 23 West Virginia who wound up with the automatic Big East BCS Bowl bid. A week later Cincinnati fell 20-3 at 8-4, 4-3 Rutgers before beating two of the three worst teams in the Big East to end the year in a three-way tie atop the conference. The Bearcats' regular-season finale was a 35-27 win over 5-7, 3-4 Connecticut to assure the Huskies would not be bowl eligible. Cincy stormed out to a 28-3 lead, but almost gave up a 23-point fourth-quarter lead in the fourth period. The 'Cats struck twice during the first quarter on defense with juniors defensive back Drew Frey and defensive lineman Walter Stewart turning a fumble and interception into touchdowns. Then sophomore quarterback Munchie Legaux found wide receivers freshman Alex Chisum and sophomore Anthony McClung twice for the next three Cincinnati scores. The Bearcats allowed two fourth-period TDs, but didn't yield a third to hold on. Vandy won their first three games including downing UConn 24-21 during Week Two, but losing five of their next six had Commodore fans worried they'd be bowl eligible. Fortunately Vanderbilt won two of their last three only losing to the Volunteers in overtime by six points. A week later the Commodores walloped 6-6, 5-3 Wake Forest 41-7 on the road. Vandy got on the scoreboard twice during the first quarter on junior placekicker Ryan Fowler field goals, but after a Demon Deacon TD the Commodores flipped on the offensive switch. Junior RB Zac Stacy ran two of three in during the second period as junior QB Jordan Rogers hooked up with senior tight end Brandon Barden from 73 yards away. Then during the third senior QB Larry Smith found sophomore WR Jordan Matthews for a 45-yard pass play as the rout was on. Now they look to carry the momentum over to this game and try and win a big bowl game to get better recruits in the offseason.
