SMU started the year 5-1, but lost four of their next five to be in danger of a .500 regular season. Fortunately for the Mustangs they were able to fend off 4-8, 3-5 Rice 27-24 to assure them a winning year. Southern Methodist jumped out to a 14-0 lead with senior quarterback J.J. McDermott's 45-yard passing touchdown to junior wide receiver Darius Johnson and freshman running back Jared Williams' 52-yard rushing TD. However the Mustangs allowed 17 straight points to fall down by three after three quarters until freshman defensive tackle turned fullback Rishard Wimbley's pair of fourth-period running TDs. The Owls scored once more at the end, but could not spell the upset despite forcing five turnovers for the game.

Elsewhere during regular-season finales Pitt punched 5-7, 1-6 Syracuse in the mouth to assure they would make a bowl game and the Orange would not. The Panthers scored the first 10 points on junior QB Tino Sunseri's 22-yard passing TD to freshman RB Isaac Bennett and junior placekicker Kevin Harper's 37-yard field goal. Freshman QB Anthony Gonzalez ran one in before Harper tallied three more FGs. After the 'Cuse pulled within one score, senior defensive back Antwuan Reed's 20-yard fumble return made it 33-20 as Pittsburgh survived by that same score.

The Panthers made a bowl game despite having twice as many losing streak as winning streaks. Pitt was 1-3 on the road only beating 7-6, 5-2 Louisville 21-14. The Panthers fell in close games at 7-5, 4-4 Iowa and No. 23 West Virginia while 8-4, 4-3 Rutgers rolled by 24 points. SMU was 2-4 in away games dumping 2-10, 1-7 Memphis 42-0 and the BCS' No. 18 Texas Christian 40-33 in overtime. The Mustangs' four losses came by at least 24 points so Pittsburgh seems like the better play in Birmingham.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the BCS Championship game, but in the meantime, check out the Compass bowl for college football betting action.
