It’s been nine years since the San Francisco 49ers have been to the playoff but none of that matter after they kick off the ball on Saturday afternoon. Jim Harbaugh has made the most of his opportunity to be an NFL Head Coach as he has taken a team that has been on the list of the most disappointing teams over the last several years and has made the Niners a team playing a home playoff game after a first round bye. Alex Smith has completed 61.3 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions and while he doesn’t have the gaudy stats, his ability to avoid the big mistakes and give his team a chance to win has been a difference maker. Frank Gore is one of the more unheralded running backs in the NFL averaging 4.3 yards per carry for 1,211 yards and eight touchdowns and Kendall Hunter has proved to be a reliable back up and a situational contributor.

Michael Crabtree has 72 catches and Vernon Davis has 67 but they each have over three times the number of catches as the next best on the team. The 49ers defense allows just 308.1 yards per game and 14.3 points while they have 42 sacks, 19 fumble recoveries, and 23 interceptions. Carlos Rodgers and Dashon Goldson each have six interceptions while NaVorro Bowman has 143 tackles Patrick Willis has 97 tackles, and Aldon Smith has 14 sacks. San Francisco doesn’t beat themselves and they haven’t been vulnerable to big plays making their defense against the Saints offense one of the more intriguing matchups of the year.

The New Orleans Saints are playing as good of football if not better than anyone in the NFL right now as tey have won nine games in a row and are looking like a well-oiled machine. Sean Peyton’s team has their share of bumps and bruises along the way but the depth they have accumulated after building a solid base in their Super Bowl run a few years back is paying huge dividends now.

Drew Brees picked up where he left off in his record breaking season as he threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns in the Wild Card round against the Lions. With Mark Ingram out Chris Ivory handled the tough yards, Darren Sproles did his thing turning small cracks in the defense into long runs , and Pierre Thomas had some demoralizing runs in the second half. No one uses their taller receivers like Brees and Marquis Colston and Jimmy Graham each had seven catches against the Lions. Jabari Greer had two interceptions which were the difference in the game against Detroit along with seven tackles while Tracy Porter, Roman Harper, and Jonathan Vilma all had strong games as well. It seems each year there is a Wild Card team that does big things, this year it could be the Saints.

San Francisco is 13-3-1 against the spread in their last 17 games, 10-2-1 against the spread in their last 13 games against NFC teams, and 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record. New Orleans is 8-0 against the spread as a favorite, 8-0 against the spread following a win, and 13-3 against the spread in their last 16 games overall. New Orleans is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games in San Francisco.

Throw out the trends because this game will be decided on the field and both of these teams will go all out to leave with a victory and advance to the next round. The winner of this game will go up against either the New York Giants or the Green Bay Packers.
