NFL Vikings beat Packers 38-26 at Lambeau Field
NFL Vikings beat Packers 38-26 at Lambeau Field

That was Brett Favre’s first visit to Green Bay after he was cast aside by the front office in 2008.Coming out of the tunnel in the Vikings uniform,he was received with a chorus of boos and even more when he walked on the field to take his first few snaps.

“Packers fans cheer for the Packers first”said Favre “I know that. But I hope that everyone in the stadium tonight said- “I sure hate those jokers on the other side, but he does play the way he’s always played.”

If he was rattled by the reception of the fans who adored and cheered him for 16 seasons,it didn’t affect his game as he threw for 244 yards,4 touchdowns and no interception in Minnesota’s 38-26 win over the Packers.

After the bitter divorce with Green Bay’s, Favre was looking for an opportunity to stick it to the Packers’ front office and he surely did it as he beat his career-team twice in less than a month

With a 17-3 lead at the half and a 51-yard TD pass from Favre to Percy Harvin to open the third quarter, the Vikings led 24-3 and it looked like it would be a walk in the park at Lambeau Field for Favre.

But Geen Bay’s QB Aaron Rodgers, who was held to 38 yards passing in the first half, led the Packers to three straight scores to make it 24-20 at the end of the third quarter. After a 62-yard drive led to Mason Crosby’s 26-yard field goal,Rodgers found tight end Spencer Havner twice from 16-yard and 5-yard TD passes.

The momentum had changed totally and with 15 ninutes to go it was anybody’s game.

Favre gave some breathing room to the Vikings on a 2-yard TD pass to Jeff Dugan but Rodgers answered with a 74-yard drive capped by a 10-yard TD pass to Greg Jennings.Minnesota led 31-26 with 10:26 left in the game.

Favre had the last word at Lambeau field as he put the Vikings ahead definitly 38-26 on a 59-yard drive which ended with his fourth touchdown pass of the game, this time a 16-yard hook-up to Bernard Berrian.

If it wasn’t for Favre’s dramatic return to Green Bay which drew all the spotlights, rookie receiver Percy Harvin would have been Sunday’s star with 5 receptions for 84 yards and a TD,and returning 5 kicks for 175 yards.

The Vikings defense sacked Rodgers six times and hit him many more, the Packers’QB had trouble getting up on a few occasions but he gave Favre a good run for his return to Green Bay.Rodgers finished with 287 yards and 3 TDs

“I’ll be OK in a couple of days”Rodgers said “This one one will hurt for a couple of days, though, physically and mentally.”

“I think it was disappointing for a lot of people” Green Bay’s cornerback Charles Woodson said “It’s just a loss, but I think a lot of people really wanted this one bad.We let a lot of people down today.”

At 7-1 Minnesota is firmly in control of the NFC North division and Green Bay at 4-3 will have to compete for a wild card berth in the playoffs. They might even meet again with the Vikings in the postseason.

“Hopefully,we’ll have another crack at those guys down the road” said Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

Vikings coach Brad Childress earned his first victory in four tries at Lambeau Field and said that Favre did a great job of “staying in body”,not letting the charged atmosphere get the best of him.

Favre wasn’t sure of what kind of reception was waiting for him in Green Bay,the fans’ booes when he came out of the tunnel and walked on the field left no room for doubt, but Favre said it doesn’t diminish his accomplishments as a Packer

“What I have done here speaks for itself ”said Favre “What I was part of was awesome. That will never change.”

Favre and the Vikings get a week off to recover from this emotional trip to Green Bay and will play Detroit at home on Week 10. The Packers travel to Tampa Bay on Sunday and then receive Dallas.
