As it happened Kevin Faulk juggled the ball on Brady’s pass, and a phenomenal play by Colts’ safety Melvin Bullit backed Faulk short of the first down. Peyton Manning made Belichick pay for his gamble, connecting with Reggie Wayne with 13 seconds left for the winning touchdown in the Colts 35-34 victory. A lot has been said and written about Belichick’s decision, yet the Patriots’coach feels what he did was right in that situation. “I tell the team, and I think they believe,I do what I think is best for our football team to win every game” Belichick said Monday “I put the team first and I put those decisions first. And I would hope everyone understands that.” Most NFL’s coaches would have punt the the ball in this situation, but it’s doubtful that the Pats’defense could stop Manning from 70 yards better than they did from 30. Manning would have got the ball back with 2minutes and 3 timeouts left,an eternity for the 2008 league’s MVP.The Colts’QB mounted 3-TD scoring drives in the second half, one of 80 yards in 3:02 and two of 79 yards in 2:04 and 1:47. Some said that Belichick’s lack of faith in his defense pushed him to take the gamble, and you can speculate on that, but Belichick simply took the decision to put the game in the hands of his most trustworthy players at clutch time,Tom Brady and Kevin Faulk. Moreover,Brady and Faulk had burned the Indianapolis’ defense with that play all night long. Most football analysts agree that Belichick’s gamble was a well-thought gutsy decision taken in an exceptional situation against an exceptional opponent, not a blunder. What do you think? When New England coach Bill Belichick told Tom Brady they were going for it on fourth-and-2 on their own 28 with 2:08 left in the game,a look of surprise fluttered on Brady’s face that seemed to say: “Really?”
