| Colts still perfect with 35-31 win over Jaguars |
I hope you didn’t miss this one. What a game !! There was 10 scores with 10 lead changes Thursday night in Jacksonville. The Jaguars opened with a lone field goal in the first quarter, Manning and the Colts finished with a lone fourth-quarter winning-touchdown.In between,Colts and Jaguars alternated in the lead scoring 9 TDs,5 in the second quarter and 3 in the third. “This was an old-time shootout at the OK Corral”Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. Peyton Manning Threw for 308 yds and 4 TDs,including a 65-yarder to Reggie Wayne to take the lead for good, and go 14-0 for the first time in franchise history.Indianapolis joins the 1972 Miami Dolphins and 2007 New England Patriots, and also extended the NFL’s record of consecutive regular-season wins at 23. Jacksonville had an opportunity to win in the closing minutes, but David Garrard overthrew Mike Thomas on a third-and-10 play and was intercepted by Jacob Lacey with one minute to go.That was the only Jaguars’ turnover in the whole game. Manning was also picked off once, for the Colts’ only turnover,in the third quarter when Dallas Clark bobbled a pass that Reggie Nelson tipped and Daryl Smith intercepted. It led to a Jaguars’ TD who took the lead 24-21. That was Manning’s only mistake, although it wasn’t even his fault. He completed his first 13 passes and finished 23 of 30,picking apart the Jaguars’secondary most of the time.Wayne caught 5 passes for 132 yds and a TD,and Clark had 7 receptions for 95 yds and 2 TDs. Special teams’ Chad Simpson had a 93 kickoff return for TD in the second quarter to put the Colts ahead 14-10. The Jaguars ended up in a shootout with the Colts,a huge mistake for a team built to run the ball and take advantage of play-action passes.Despite Maurice Jones-Drew success,he ran for 110 yds and a TD in 27 carries, they abandonned the running game once they got behind and had trouble sustaining drives. Garrard was 23 of 40 for 223 yds and 3 TDs,but made his only mistake on the last drive when the Jaguars could have won the game with a TD. The Jaguars (7-7) lost their third game in the last 4,and no longer hold their fate in their hands in the AFC wild-card race. Indy coach Caldwell kept DEs Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis on the bench most of the night for precautionary reasons, but Manning,Clark, Wayne and the other starters played the whole game. The Colts again did enough to win,and Manning is staying toe-to-toe in the heads-up race for MVP with New Orleans’ QB Drew Brees. The Saints will have a chance to join the Colts at 14-0 by beating the Cowboys in New Orleans Saturday night.
