| Sunday’s BIG GAME Ravens-Steelers Preview |
This year they are fighting for a spot in the playoffs.Baltimore (8-6) has consolidated its hold on a wild-card berth with the 31-7 win over Chicago last Sunday, and Pittsburgh kept its chances alive with a last minute 37-36 rally in a thrilling contest against the Packers. However, the Steelers will need help to make the post season, even if they win on Sunday and at Oackland next week. The Ravens,on the other hand ,control their fate. They would make the playoffs with a win at Pittsburgh, together with Jacksonville and New York Jets losses. Denver (8-6) holds the other wild card at the moment, and the Jaguars and the Jets are part of a group of 6 teams at 7-7. “We approach the fact that we control our own destiny as a challenge” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said “It’s well deserved. We’ve fought through a lot of adversity.” Joe Flacco had a carrer-high 4 TD passes against the Bears, and the Ravens’defense forced 6 Chicago turnovers leading to 24 points, one week after setting team records with 5 rushing TDs and 548 total yards in a 48-3 rout of Detroit. Although these last two victories look pretty impressive, they came against lesser teams with a 7-21 combined record. The Ravens have to expect a much tougher test at Pittsburgh who is fighting for his life. Ben Roethlisberger went 29 of 46 with 3 TDs and a franchise record 503 yards against a Packers defense that came into the game second in total defense. On the game’s final play,Big Ben completed a desperation 19-yd TD pass to Mike Wallace who barely got both feet inbounds in the corner of the end zone.Without that improbable play, the Steelers season would have been over. “It’s amazing how one play can change everything”said Roethlisberger and coach Mike Tomlin added “Not dead yet. We’ve got a little pulse here.” Most of the Steelers problems come from their defense that has looked tired late in games, and has allowed a league-high 11 TD passes in the fourth quarter. The absence of 5-time Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu for a knee injury has been crucial, Pittsburgh has won the only 3 games he played in this season. The Baltimore defense also has problems, safety Ed Reed has missed the last three games, and cornerback Lardarius Webb who tore a right knee ligament against the Bears is out for the season. That’s not good news for the Ravens secondary who will face Roethlisberger this time. The Steelers’ QB missed the game in the 20-17 overtime loss to Baltimore for a concussion.Big Ben led his team to victory in the last four games against the Ravens, including a 23-14 win in last season’s AFC championship game. Pittsburgh has won 6 of 8 games at Heinz Field against Baltimore since 2001,I think they will beat the Ravens on Sunday to keep alive their slim chances to defend their Super Bowl title.
