| Ravens clinched playoffs with 21-13 win over Raiders |
They will travel to New England on Sunday to take on the Patriots who lost 34-27 in Houston. RB Willis McGahee scored on a 2-yard rush to put the Ravens ahead 21-13 with 2 minutes left in the game.MacGahee ran for a career-high 167 yds and 3 TDs,including a 36-yd run from his 15 to ice the game after the Ravens recovered a fumble by QB Jamarcus Russell. “Willis took over the game the way he ran”coach John Harbaugh said “I think our offensive line deserves a lot of credit.Obviously there were holes,but this guy was running north and south.He was powerful,he was explosive,and I think he’s worked really hard all season to have this kind of game.” The Raiders(5-11) put on a hard fight for most of the game but were unable to stop McGahee and couldn’t pull it out in the end behind former starter JaMarcus Russell. The Raiders have lost 11 or more games in each of the last seven seasons,the worst run in NFL history.It could mark the end of Tom Cable as head coach.He says he’s confident he’ll be back next year,but has received no reassurances from owner Al Davis. “I’m desappointed because we didn’t win”said Cable “I thought we were going to.And yet I feel excited about what’s coming back.But there’s got to be some things added and tweaked and fixed.” Cable made some progress in his 28 games as Raiders coach,but his inability to develop former No1 pick Russel as a legitimate NFL starter might weigh heavily against him. Russel led a comeback in a 20-19 win at Denver two weeks ago and appeared to be able to repeat the feat when he led the Raiders to a field goal to cut Baltimore’s lead to 14-13,but 2 turnovers ended Oackland’s hopes to win the game.Russell,who was benched midway through the season and came on in relief in 3 of the last seven games,including Sunday after Charlie Frye left with an ankle and back injury.Russell has 17 turnovers for 3 TD passes all season. Willis McGahee was the hero of the game for the Ravens,scoring all three touchdowns.His second score,in the second quarter,when he stiff-armed Hiram Eugene to the ground for a 77-yd running touchdown,was spectacular. “I wasn’t expected it to work that way”said McGahee “I was shocked just like everyone else was shocked.I knew I was gonna stiff-arm,but I didn’t know he was going to fall backward.There is no going back,though;you got to keep going forward.” The Ravens did what they had to do to get in the playoffs,now they have to play the Patriots on Sunday.Baltimore is 0-5 against New England,including a 27-21 loss on November 4. The Baltimore Ravens (9-7) knew they had to win their regular-season finale at Oackland to claim a wild-card berth into the playoffs.They came through,just as they did last year when they had to beat Jacksonville to make the postseason.
