Jets earn playoff spot with 37-0 win over Bengals
Jets earn playoff spot with 37-0 win over Bengals New York Jets first-year coach Rex Ryan and rookie quatreback Mark Sanchez are headed to the playoffs after the Jets defense shut down the Cincinnati Bengals on a freezing Sunday night.

The Jets (9-7) might have got some lucky breaks along the way,but they did what they had to do on their last regular-season game:WIN or take an early winter rest.

New York appeared to have a very slim chance to make it into the postseason after the discouraging 10-7 home-loss to Atlanta two weeks ago.Even coach Ryan announced mistakenly after the game that “they were obviously out of the playoffs”,before correcting himself the following day.

Inatead, the Jets beat the previously undefeated Colts on Week 16 (after Peyton Manning and other star starters were pulled out in the third quarter),and several teams in playoffs contention lost to set up the win-and-in game against the Bengals.

Rex Ryan’s top-ranked defense shut down Cincinnati and Mark Sanchez did a good job at protecting the ball and eating the clock. The Jets earned their first postseason appearence in three seasons and set up a rematch against the AFC North champions Bengals (10-6) in the first round Saturday at Cincinnati.

“This wasn’t our goal to make the playoffs. Our goals are much higher.”said coach Ryan “We were 4-6 and we had a mission with the team.It went from impossible to improbable, back to impossible and then to inevitable.”

Ryan led his players back onto the field after a few minutes in the locker room, celebrating with a victory lap and high-fiving the few thousand remaining frozen, but happy, fans.

Sanchez wasn’t allowed to take any risks,he went 8 of 16 for 63 yards with no turnovers before being replaced by Kerry Clemens late in the fourth quarter with the game in hand.RB Thomas Jones ran for 78 yds and 2 TDs,and WR Brad Smith had 92 yds rushing, including a 32-yd TD run.

The Bengals opened with most of their starters-RB Cedric Benson was the only healthy one not to play-but were outgained 138 yds to1 in the first quarter, and New York had 250 yds at halftime, including 190 on the ground,to 7 for Cincinnati.

Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco, however, said his team would be ready for the rematch on Saturday. “We’ll be fine”he said “We’ll study a lot of things we can fix, especially offensively.Next week will be a lot more serious.”

It’s not easy to rebound from such a beating, and Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis didn’t hide his concern. “It was not the outcome we wanted”Lewis said “The Jets outplayed us in all three phases. We get a chance to regroup and get going again Saturday afternoon.”

Maybe the Bengals didn’t go full speed in New York at the prospect of a rematch at home against a rookie QB (Sanchez) prone to turnovers, instead of the alternative which was facing Houston who beat them 28-17 on Oct.18 in Cincinnati, and beat New England 34-27 on Sunday.Could that have been the plan?

The Jets finished No1 in the NFL in total defense, passing defense, points allowed ,and also 1st on rushing offense. They certainly got a few lucky breaks on the way,but the stats show that they deserve to be in the playoffs.
