Cowboys win NFC East with 24-0 victory over Eagles
Cowboys win NFC East with 24-0 victory over Eagles It was on last year’s season-ending game that the Philadelphia Eagles crushed the Cowboys 44-6 in Philadelphia with a playoff berth at stake.

Although both teams already secured a spot in the 2009 postseason, there was plenty at stake on the Sunday matchup. The Cowboys (11-5) won the division, earned a rematch at Cowboys Stadium for the first-round playoffs Saturday at 8:00 p.m.,and denied Philadelphia the No2 seed and a bye on the first week of the postseason.

Tony Romo and the entire offense set various single-season records, having a winning record after December 1 for the first time since 1996,and ending a nine-game losing streak in season finales. The Cowboys also posted consecutive shutouts for the first time in team history with the 24-0 win over the Eagles (11-5), after beating the Redskins

17-0 in Washington last week.

December started badly for Dallas, with 2 losses, but they rebounded with a victory in New Orleans against the then undefeated Saints and went on to win 3 in a row.

Romo threw a pair of early touchdown passes on Sunday, then the defense took over and the Cowboys blanked the Eagles. With every facet of their game clicking together at the same time, maybe the Cowboys can finally win a playoff game for the first time since 1996.Yes,it’s been that long.

Philadelphia came in riding a six-game winning streak during which they averaged 31.2 points per game, and would have clinched the NFC No2 seed and the NFC East title with a win.The loss sends them to the No6 seed, the lower of two wild cards.

Donovan McNabb threw for 223 yards and the Eagles gained just 228 overall. The Cowboys had 291 yards by halftime,on their way to 474 total.Romo was 24 of 34 for 311 yds and 2 TDs.

“We’re going to go back to the drawing board.”said Eagles coach Andy Reid.

The Cowboys will have to repeat the performance this week if they want to break the 13-year streak without a playoff win.

It’s unlikely that the powerful Eagles offense will be shut down two games in a row.

However,it’s the Cowboys defense-which is run by coach Wade Phillips-that is carrying the team.Over the last four games,Dallas faced the NFL’s three highest-scoring offenses and held all of them to their fewest points of the season.

Team owner Jerry Jones called Phillips “the MVP of the defense” earlier this week.

Now that Phillips has won two division titles in his three seasons as Dallas’head coach,Jones might very well pick up the team option on the coach’s contract for next season. It didn’t look that good three weeks ago.

These back-to-back shutouts by the Cowboys defense are quite spectacular,it hasn’t been done since Tennesse did it in 2000,and it’s only the third time in 50 seasons that Dallas has put 2 shutouts in a year.Who would have thought those acomplishments were so rare?

Anyway,Philadelphia has another shot at Dallas on Saturday, this time the loser gets to rest for the winter.
