Vikings clinch NFC’s No2 seed with 44-7 rout of the Giants
Vikings clinch NFC’s No2 seed with 44-7 rout of the Giants Brett Favre and the Vikings regrouped, after losing 3 out of 4 games in December,to end the regular season in style with a 44-7 victory over the New York Giants.

Favre completed 25 of 31 passes for 316 yards and 4 TDs in less than three quarters with no turnover. The Vikings (12-4) controlled the game from the start against a Giants team sitting five players who started at least four games this season, and rushed to the locker room to watch the Philadelphia-Dallas game that would determine who would get the No2 seed and a bye on the first playoff week.

“I think it’s proof of what we’re capable of doing.”Favre said “Where it takes us from here,I have no idea. But it was definitly a momentum boost and confidence.”

When Dallas emerged as the winner,Minnesota secured the No2 seed and is guaranteed to play inside until the Super Bowl in Miami, where cold weather is never a factor. The Vikings will have at least one game at the Metrodome, and will play the NFC championship game either at the Superdome in New Orleans or at home,if they stay alive in the playoffs.

Favre finished the season with 33 TD passes for only 7 interceptions-the fewest in his 18-year career as a starter. He made it through 16 games without much harm, either, his ability to stay healthy for a full season being a major concern.

“Everyone wants to talk about me being 40.I’m fine.”Favre said, declaring himself fit for the playoff run with or without a bye. “Would it help?I’m sure it would. But I’m fine.”

The Vikings passed the ball 35 times for only 22 runs in the first three quarters, even keeping the offense on the field for fourth-and-goal at the 1 on Favre’s final possession. He capped it with a TD pass to fullback Naufahu Tahi to make it 44-0.

Coach Brad Childress attempted to slow down his team, but cornerback Cedric Griffin said the coaches emphasized “having a statement game” before the playoffs.

“Just wanted to stay on the gas”said Childress.

Sydney Rice caught 6 passes for 112 yds and 2 TDs,and TE Visanthe Shianco had 7 receptions for 94 yds and 1 TD.Adrian Peterson carried the ball only 9 times for 54 yds and score his 18th TD of the season.

While the Giants gained only 73 yds in the first three quarters, the Vikings drove up and down the field to post their highest score of the season.

“It felt good just to be back in rhythm offensively”said Peterson “The defensive side looked good too. That’s definitly the way you want to enter the playoffs.”

However, this impressive win came against a Giants team who had nothing to play for,and kept various key players off the field, including lead RB Brandon Jacobs and starting offensive linemen Rich Seubert and Kareem McKenzie.

“I do think we tried”said coach Tom Coughlin “I’m not going to say it was a great performance, but they all came to the stadium wanting to play.”

After crushing Washington and putting themselves in a solid position for a playoff spot, the Giants were blown out at home last week by Carolina and will miss the playoffs for the first time in five years. This after Eli Manning got a $100 million contract extension in the preseason, and the Giants 5-0 start in 2009.

Eli Manning went 13 of 23 for 141 yds, threw an interception and lost a fumble.

“I’m really confused”said Manning “We were playing so well at Washington and had an opportunity, and I don’t know what happened to get to this point.”

We’ll see in two weeks which the real Vikings are,the struggling December team or the flamboyant regular-season-ending Sunday’s game winners.
