| WILD-CARD Jets – Bengals Preview |
Last Sunday Coach Marvin Lewis and the Bengals, knowing that there was a chance they would meet again the following week, came to New York with a simplified game plan. They didn’t expected, though to be outplayed so badly, losing 37-0 to a Jets team that needed a victory to make the playoffs. For the second straight week the Bengals will face cold conditions, and the best defense in the league that held them to a franchise-worst 72 yards, none passing. The Jets leads the NFL in scoring defense (14.8 points per game) and total defense, allowing only 252.3 yards per game. The Bengals were just as bad on defense, surrendering 257 yards rushing to the Jets who lead the league averaging 172.2 yds on the ground. RB Cedric Benson was rested, but Cincinnati played the rest of its starters until the game was out of reach.QB Carson Palmer went 1 of 11 for 0 yds with an interception before leaving in the third quarter. Chad Ochocinco hurt his left knee slipping on the slick field during pregame warmups last Sunday.Shadowed by Jets CB Darelle Revis (one of the best if not the best in the league),Ochocinco failed to catch a pass for the first time since 2003,a span of 120 games. However, coach Lewis said that he’s healthy and will play Saturday. Benson, who has rushed for a career-high 1,25 yds,and is 9th in the NFL with 128.5 yds a game will also be back in the lineup. That should help the Cincinnati offense which has struggle all season long and has scored the fewest points of any team in the playoffs, finishing the regular season ranked 24th in the league in total offense with 309.1 yds per game. “It starts with No 32 and that’s how it will go on Saturday.”said Ochocinco. The Bengals were outmatched physically in fridgid conditions at the Meadowlands, they will have to find solutions quickly as they return home with temperatures expected to be in the low 20s. The New York Jets did what was expected from them.Rookie QB Mark Sanchez wasn’t allowed to take any risks,he completed 8 of 16 passes for 63 yds, while RBs Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene pounded the Bengals defense on the ground. Jones rushed for 78 yds and 2 TDs in 27 carries, and Greene gained 62 yds in13.Do-it-all WR Brad Smith ran for 92 yds and 1 TD in four attempts. Jets coach Rex Ryan was defensive coordinator last season when rookie QB Joe Flacco led Baltimore to the AFC championship, when Ryan’s rough defense and the Ravens’ running game led the way. That’s the same formula Pittsburgh used when Ben Roethlisberger won the Super Bowl despite mediocre numbers in his second season, and Cincinnati can expect more of the same on Saturday as Jets coach Ryan is not likely to change his winning strategy. After the Jets lost leading RB Leon Washington early in the season,Thomas Jones picked up the slack and finished fouth in the league with a career-high 1,402 yds rushing, and rookie Shonn Greene is averaging 5 yds in 108 carries. “We’re trying to win the thing. That’s our goal.”said Ryan Providing Mark Sanchez takes care of the ball as he’s done in the turnover-free last 2 games, the New York Jets are my favorite to beat the inconsistant Bengals Saturday.
