Jets’rookies beat Bengals 24-14
Jets’rookies beat Bengals 24-14 First-year head coach Rex Ryan, rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez and rookie running back Shonn Greene made their first postseason appearence Saturday, and gave the New York Jets their first playoff victory since 2004.

As expected, with Sanchez playing mistake-free,the Jets dominated the Bengals for the second time in a week. The rookie QB hasn’t turn the ball over in the last three games, after throwing 20 interceptions before that.

Sanchez threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter to tie the game at 7-7,and the top running game in the NFL took it from there for a 24-14 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

“It’s pretty special” Sanchez said “It’s got nothing to do with me.”

On the contrary, the Jets’win had everything to do with him.Playing in freezing conditons against a defense that tried its best to put the game in his hands,Sanchez was 12 of 15 for 182 yds and a score, earning a spectacular 139.4 passer rating. It could even have been better,WR Braylon Edwards let a perfect long pass slip through his fingers in the end zone during the first half.

Considered the Jets’ weakest link going into the playoffs,Sanchez became their focal point, getting his first playoff win before his boyhood idol, counterpart Bengals’ QB Carson Palmer.

“He had the eye of the tiger today and he was ready to get out there and throw it around.”coach Ryan said “I see him getting better and better each day on the practice. What a job he’s done.I think he’s tired of hearing he’s the weak link on this football team.”

The other rookie,RB Shonn Greene, third round pick of the draft, also came big under pressure, running for 135 yds including a 39-yd TD,leading a running game that raked 171 yds for a rare back-to-back sweep of the Bengals.

The only positive result for Cincinnati came for RB Cedric Benson who ran for a franchise-record 169 yds in a playoff game. The Jets defense, however, allowed little else from the Bengals.

The NewYork Jets have got a few big breaks to make the playoffs, and have been totally overlooked as a contender in the postseason. Not anymore after destroying the AFC North champions twice.

“They might have a chance to make a move.“ said Carson Palmer “Their defense is that good.”

Palmer knows what he’s talking about,Cincinnati’s offense was held to 72 yds -none passing- in a 37-0 rout at the Meadowlands six days earlier, with Chad Ochocinco getting shut out by Darelle Revis.Ochocinco had only 2 catches for 28 yds Saturday.

“This was a great team effort.”said Ryan, who won in his playoff debut as a head coach. “We are a good football team.If people don’t believe that, they soon will.”

Sanchez was by far the lowest-ranked passer in the playoffs, throwing a league’s second-most 20 interceptions, until Saturday.Playing without a glove on his throwing hand in an 8-degree wind chill, the kid from Southern California joined Shaun King,Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger as rookie quarterbacks to win postseason starts.

“It just blows your mind”Sanchez said “It’s unbelievable.I hope I have this feeling next week.” The Jets had a scare before kickoff when punter Steve Weatherford was ruled out sick.Kicker Jay Feely punted for the first time in his NFL career, averaging 31 yds on 7 kicks, and also made a 20 yds field goal with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter to give New York a two scores advantage at 24-14.

His counterpart Bengals’kicker Shayne Graham missed 2 field goals in the fourth quarter, including a 28-yarder with 3:49 to go that sealed the Jets’ victory.

The AFC South champions Indianapolis Colts (14-2),who pulled their starters on Week 16 to allow the Jets to come back with a 29-15 win,and make the playoffs with a victory over Cincinnati the follwing week, maight live to regret it if they have to face them again.

With Baltimore win at New England, the New York Jets will travel to San Diego to face the AFC West champions Chargers in the playoffs’ second round.
