| Cowboys’ 34-14 win over Eagles ended a 13-year drought. |
Owner Jerry Jones exclaimed “Demons are gone !!” and Keith Brooking pretented to pull a monkey off coach Wade Phillips’ back. Phillips was 0-4 in the playoffs as a head coach (with Denver and Buffalo),and QB Tony Romo 0-2.Dallas’defense -Phillips is the only NFL’s head coach who is also defense coordinator – was a huge factor in this victory, and Romo broke the game open with five scoring drives in the second quarter.Redemption for both men, finally. “It’s just...rewarding.”Romo said “It makes me proud of the guys in there –fighting, grinding, staying commited to the approach.I’m happy for the guys, happy for Wade, happy for Jerry.” The Cowboys have dominated in their last four games, the defense allowing few points form their opponents, shutting down Washington and Philadelphia in consecutive games, and Romo playing some of the best football of his career. Romo went 23 of 35 for 244 yds and no turnovers. He got deep in Philadelphia’s territory in 9 of his 10 drives, hitting 8 different receivers. He found rookie John Phillips and Miles Austin for his 2 TDs,and also hit Roy Williams 5 times for 59 yds. “This team has hung together all year, got stronger at the end of the year and is playing our best football.” Phillips said “I think we’re playing as good as anybody right now.” The Eagles were one-and-done for the first time in the playoffs under coach Andy Reid.Philadelphia was 7-0 in playoff openers with Reid and 6-0 with Donovan McNabb at quarterback, but they finished 0-3 against Dallas this season. The Eagles lost 24-0 last weekend in their first trip to Cowboys Stadium and didn’t do much better Saturday. They got Michael Vick back from injury, and he threw a 76-yd TD pass to Jeremy Maclin on his first snap to tie the game at 7 in the second quarter, but he also messed up a handoff deep inside his own territory, setting the Cowboys up for the TD that made it 24-7.Dallas stretched the lead to 27-7 at halftime, and a 73-yd TD run by Felix Jones made it 34-7 going into the fourth quarter. “They were better all the way around”Reid said “When you get your tail kicked,it’s not a great feeling. No one expected it.” McNabb finished 19 of 37 for 230 yds with 1 TD and 1 interception.Wideout DeSean Jackson was held without huge gains, although he had a 4-yd TD catch in the fourth quarter.Too little, too late. Dallas’ DeMarcus Ware had 2 sacks,Bobby Carpenter had 2 fumbles recoveries, and Mike Jenkins redeemed himself breaking up a long pass and intercepting one after allowing Jeremy Maclin’s 76-yd TD. Felix Jones became the featured back with Marion Barber limited to 3 carries because of a knee injury, and finished gaining a career-best 148 yds with a score. Dallas’ previous playoff win was so long ago that two players from that team are already in the hall of fame, and two more are finalists for next month’s vote. When the Cowboys opened dreaded December with a couple of losses, everybody in Dallas expected another meltdown. The team then went on to beat the previously undefeated Saints in New Orleans, and followed that with back-to-back shutouts for the first time in franchise history. Next up for Dallas is a trip to Minnesota on Sunday, with Romo taking on childhood hero Brett Favre.
