Playoffs Divisional Round Ravens - Colts Preview
Playoffs Divisional Round Ravens - Colts PreviewThe Indianapolis Colts locked up the AFC’s No 1 seed in Week 15 with a 14-0 record.Despite a realistic shot at a perfect season, the team’s management decided to pull Peyton Manning and many other starters during the following week’s game, resulting in a 29-15 loss to the New York Jets.

The decision drew the ire of many Indianapolis fans among others, though the team held firm it was the right move because staying healthy for a title run meant so much more than going 16-0.

“The ultimate goal is to get to the Super Bowl and win.”DE Raheem Brock said.

It will take no less than a three-game winning streak starting Saturday to confirm that the Colts were right taking that controversial decision.

The Colts (14-2) will begin the postseason Saturday not having played a meaningful game in nearly a month, since they beat Jacksonville on Dec.17 to extend their league-record regular-season win streak to 23.

They could be rusty after back-to-back losses and a week off,not forgetting that the Colts are 0-3 in the playoffs since 1999 following a first-round bye. This season looks very much like 2005,when they started 13-0 but lost 2 of 3 before falling to Pittsburgh in the divisional round.

The next season,Indianapolis earned its only trip to the Super Bowl in the Manning era, including a 15-6 divisional win over Baltimore.Since then, the Colts have lost back-to-back playoff openers to San Diego.

“Every year, we think we’ve got to win it and we feel as a group that we probably should have won more Super Bowls in this decade.” DE Dwight Freeney said. “There’s probably more pressure with that than what’s being said about 16-0.”

The Ravens (10-7) won 3 of their last 4 regular-season games to qualify for the playoffs, and opened on the wild-card weekend with a dominating performance in a 33-14 victory at New England Sunday.

They had a similar run last year, when they closed the regular season 5-1 to earn a wild-card berth and reached the AFC title game.

Six days after holding Tom Brady to 154 yds and intercepting 3 of his passes, the Ravens face Peyton Manning, named league MVP for a record fourth times after throwing for 4,500 yds and 33 TDs.

“We got the two best quarterbacks in the game back-to-back.We definitely have to bring our A game.”LB Terrell Suggs said.

Manning has a 7-0 record against the Ravens since 2001,and his 97.5 passer rating against Ray Lewis and the Baltimore defense is slightly better than his career average. Manning wasn’t sacked in the teams last meeting on Nov. 22 ,when he went 22 of 31 for 299 yds with a TD and 2 interceptions in a 17-15 victory.

While the Colts’ offense comes mostly through the air,the Ravens ground game has been dominant.Baltimore has averaged 5.5 yds per carry in the last five games while rushing for 1,081 yds.

Ray Rice has 623 of those yds and stunned the New England fans last Sunday with an 83-TD run on the first play from scrimmage. He rushed for a total 159 yds and 2 scores in that game.

QB Joe Flacco, bothered by a hip injury, was 15 of 29 over the last two weeks and played more of a game manager’s role. The Ravens will need more production from their quarterback if they want to win against Manning and the Colts Saturday.

“I feel really good. The most important thing is I woke up Monday feeling better than I did Sunday.” Flacco said “I feel that it’s all starting to work itself out.”

The Ravens had an 0-5 record going into the game against the Patriots Sunday, can they break the 0-7 streak against Manning and the Colts Saturday?

Indianapolis looks like the favorite in this divisional matchup,we’ll see if the long rest forced by the team’s management doesn’t work against them.
