Favre leads Vikings to 34-3 win over Cowboys

Brett Favre came back,this time with Minnesota, for another shot at winning it all, and now he’s got it.

Four touchdown passes from the 40-year-old quarterback sent the Vikings to the NFC championship game in a 34-3 rout of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

“THIS IS WHAT I CAME BACK FOR” Favre said, and, smiling, “Probably the most fatigue I got today was celebrating.”

The Vikings (13-4) will take on the Saints (14-3) Sunday at the Superdome in New Orleans, with the winner going to the Super bowl in Miami.

Favre found Sidney Rice for 3 scores and put an exclamation point on the final one when his fourth-and-3 pass was caught in the end zone by Visanthe Samuel after the 2-minute warning. AMAZING !!

This was the first time in 23 playoff games that Favre threw for 4 TDs, and the first time he beat Dallas after losing to the Cowboys in his first three postseason experiences with Green Bay.

Brett Favre became the first 40-year-old quarterback to win a playoff game.

“Today was like this season: it’s been wonderful,” said Favre, whose only championship came 13 years ago with the Packers.

He finished 15 of 24 for 234 yds without a turnover, slapping high fives with anyone in reach and pumping his right arm after each score.

The Minnesota defense harassed Tony Romo constantly, led by a magnificent Ray Edwards who sacked Dallas’ QB 3 times out of 6 total. Romo sat stone-faced on the bench between possessions in the second half after turning the ball 3 times against his childhood idol.

He went 22 of 35 for 198 yd , lost two of his three fumbles and threw an interception right to Ben Leber deep in his own end in the third quarter.

“Right now, it’s just hard to think the season is over.” Romo said.

After gaining 118 yds in the first quarter, the Cowboys (12-6) got only 130 in the next three, and took a severe spanking after winning their first playoff game in 13 years a week before against Philadelphia. “It’s like the elevator falling from the top. It’s tough when it’s over. If you don’t win it all, you have not reached your goal.” Coach wade Phillips said.

The Vikings, who had last week off, weren’t pleased seeing all the people picking Dallas to win. It showed, Favre and his teammates were extra motivated,a bunch of guys on a mission.

Dallas, though, mounted two long drives down the field in the first quarter.The turning point came when Romo dropped a second-down snap at the 35,and Shaun Suisham missed the field goal.The Cowboys came out empty,and four plays later Favre found Rice in single coverage and fired a perfect pass up the sideline from 47 yds out.On one big play, the game shifted in favor of Minnesota.

Favre took some hard hits by the Dallas front seven,but he looked like a 20-year-old, stepping up in the pocket and eluding tackles to find his receivers with pinpoint accuracy. He looked like the missing Super bowl piece the Vikings were seashing for when they lured him out of retirement to join them last summer.

“He’s playing his heart out” said DE Jared Allen.

The Vikings won all eight games at home this season, supported by a howling crowd that helped the defensive line and fired up the whole team.

This coming Sunday, the crowd might be even louder helping the Saints in the Superdome. Favre and the Vikings will have to deal with it, facing the most prolific offense in the league.
