Brees, named Super Bowl XLIV MVP, joins QBs eliteNew Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, with Super bowl XLIV victory, joins Peyton Manning and Tom Brady at the top.

Quarterbacks are defined by winning Super Bowls, and by the style in which they do it. Brees did it in grand style in Miami, outplaying Peyton Manning in the process.

Brees’ completion percentage of 82.1 is the highest in Super Bowl history with 30 or more completions, and his 32 completions tied a Super bowl record held by Brady.

Brees threw for 288 yards, two TDs and no interception for a 114.5 passer rating as the Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 last Sunday to give the franchise the first Super Bowl victory in its 43 years history.

At barely 6-feet tall, Brees is the shortest starting QB in the NFL, but it didn’t matter against the Colts as he came alive in the second quarter with the Saints trailing 10-0, and methodically carved up Indy’s defense. In the second half he was unconscious, completing 16 passes on 17 attempts.

He was named MVP of Super Bowl XLIV, and nobody ever has deserved it more.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Brees said. “To be a Super Bowl champion is enough for me.”

A little man in the land of giants, Brees has a big drive to make up for his stature. All Saints players swear he’s the most competitive man on the team, and when he plays against great quarterbacks it shows. In four games this year against Super Bowl MVPs, Brees threw 14 TD passes and no interceptions.

In beating Manning, the Saints became the first team to beat three consecutive Super Bowl MVPs in the playoffs. They took down Kurt Warner in the first round, Brett Favre in the NFC championship and Manning Sunday night.

“He’s the MVP tonight for a reason,” New Orleans coach Sean Payton said.

When he sat at the podium Sunday night in full uniform, Brees talked about what the Super Bowl victory means to his teammates and the city of New Orleans.

“We played for so much more than ourselves,” said Brees. “We played for the entire Gulf Coast region. We played for the entire “Who Dat’ Nation.”

However, Brees did great good for himself too. By leading the Saints on a dreamlike season that ended like a fairy tale, Brees knows he has arrived at the greatest destination for a quarterback.

Now, his name will be pronounced in the same breath as those of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Not bad for a quarterback the Saints picked up in 2006 when nobody wanted him.
