| Golf Majors Wind Up For The Year With PGA Championship |
Tiger Woods is the big story heading into this year’s PGA Championship—he’s coming off the worst four round performance of his career at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational where he finished tied for 78th in an 80 player field. Woods has been in substandard form all year and that, combined with the aforementioned result, has knocked golf’s most famous player from the top of the golf betting future odds. For the first time in recent memory, Tiger isn’t favored heading into the weekend. With Tiger off his game the PGA is a wide open event and the betting odds clearly reflect this—Phil Mickelson is the current favorite but even he’s +1200 with Tiger Woods the #2 choice at +1400. When betting an event with such a wide open field you definitely want value. Phil Mickelson may be a better choice than Tiger Woods this week, but he’s not very attractive at such a short price when so many good golfers are available with much bigger payouts. One player worth a look is the #3 betting choice, Rory McIlroy available at +1600. He’s been the hottest player in the sport over the past couple of months and is definitely someone to watch in the future—he’s just 21 years old so he’ll be a factor for years to come. Right behind McIlroy both on the wagering choices and on our list for this event is Irishman Padraig Harrington. An accredited CPA and the son of a boxer, Harrington has three career major victories though none since 2008. He’s been playing better lately, however, and could feel right at home at Whistling Straits which was designed to replicate the ‘feel’ of a traditional Irish golf course complete with the waterfront setting and the tricky winds. Harrington could be the ‘horses for courses’ pick this week and he’s priced at +1800. In addition to McIlroy and Harrington, we’ll look to take a position on another European golfer in Paul Casey. Casey made a nice run at the British Open before falling short in the final round, and like Harrington should be very comfortable at Whistling Straits which is something of an atypical design for an American course. For whatever reason, Casey isn’t considered among the favorites for this tournament meaning that you’re getting an exceptional golfer at +4000. Finally, we’ll look at a golfer with some of the longest odds in the field—he’s priced this way not due to a lack of talent or bad form but simply because he’s so far under the radar of the casual fan. J.B. Holmes is one of the longest hitters on the tour and is having a very solid and consistent year with 18 made cuts in 19 starts. His power off the tee will be extremely valuable in countering the winds off of Lake Michigan, and he’s definitely worth look—priced at +10200 even a small bet could produce a huge payoff should Holmes win the tournament.

The final major golf tournament of the year takes place this weekend as the PGA Championship is contested at Wisconsin’s Whistling Straits. The defending champion is Y.E. Yang of South Korea, who became the first Asian-born player to win a major with his victory at Minnesota's Hazeltine National Golf Club in 2009. The PGA Tournament was first held in 1916 at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y and rotates among different courses throughout the United States. It began as a match-play tournament, but long ago transitioned to the more popular stroke-play event. Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus hold the record for most PGA Championship titles, with five each, while Tiger Woods has won four times.
